Getting rid of a tree stump
I've got this birch tree threatening my tarmac and drains at the side of the drive, I can see it lifting the tarmac.
Its about 15 foot high and the trunk is about a foot diameter at the root under the soil line. Word on google is to fell the tree, treat the stump with AMMONIUM SULPHAMATE and wait 12 weeks. Anyone know what happens next? I figure its dead, but will it go all crumbly so I can set about it with an axe? |

I recommend you go on the scrounge at your local quarry

Re: Getting rid of a tree stump
Cut it down so the stump is a few feet high then dig around it and hack off any roots as you come to them. Give it a wiggle every now and again to loosen soil. It requires patience but it will come out. I dug one out the other day and took about an hour and half.

Re: Getting rid of a tree stump
Yeah you can get them out, not sure a tree of that size would take an hour and a half though, might take a bit longer to get that root ball out.
The tree rotting solution does work, drill loads of holes in the cut off stump and put the solution down the holes and wait a few weeks. |
Re: Getting rid of a tree stump
Decent tree surgeon with a stump grinder would have that out no bother...

Re: Getting rid of a tree stump
defo +1 on the tree surgeon
We had 2, 25ft ish connifers removed by a local tree surgeon, including the stumps. He chipped the whole lot and cleared up after himself for £175 cash. Way better than all the agro and time of doing it myself. |
Re: Getting rid of a tree stump
A bowsaw, axe and chemicals and mucho fun for £50 sounds better
