high reving and misfiring idle

Hi all,

As the title suggests I've got another problem with my sv and could do with your collected wisdom to help me fix it. Basically when i started it up yesterday morning everything went fine. It's a curvy model so I put the choke on full and it fired up fine. I waited a minute or so for it to warm up, disengaged the choke and noticed that it was still idling at about 2600rpm which is obviously way too high. I also noticed it misfiring as well. The bike is well used, ive been commuting on it all last week up until this happened.

I read on svrider that it could be down to a crack in the rubber throttle body cap, however am I right in thinking that carb'ed bikes like mine don't have throttle bodies? If anyone could help, as always it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

on the proviso you haven't played with the throttle cable or idle speed adjuster, if closing the choke made no difference to the idle speed you either have a problem with the choke plunger(s) being stuck, or the choke cable (check the cable splitter).

Cheers Mark.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't adjusted either the choke or throttle cable. The revs did drop when I disengaged the choke, but they just didn't drop enough. Normally with the choke on it will rev to about 3600 to 3800 (when warm) and when I disengage the choke drop to about 1300rpm. However this time it dropped from 3600rpm (full choke) to 2500rpm (no choke). I will check to make sure everything with the choke is working as it should as you suggested.

Many thanks,

Jonathan.

you have two choke plungers, that would fit if one was sticking or one of the cables from the splitter had come off.

Cheers Mark.

This

It sounds like a seized plunger, it could be worth stripping them off the carbs also. Make sure you sure liberal amounts of grease
