Hello and which tyres?
Hi all
Just saying Hi as i'm new to biking and have an SV650s K5 pointy. Had the bike about 6 months now and all going well. I've changed the oil, oil filter and air filter myself and next up are the plugs and coolant. Bike has done just over 6k miles (owned by a friend before me) so is a well loved bike. The bike is on it's original tyres and even though they have a few mm of tread left, I'm looking to replace them as they are now 5 years old. I'm purley a weekend dry weather (sorry!) biker so was really after a set that offers grip over wet weather/winter performance. That said, it won't be tracked so all on road driving. Budget is not a problem so just wondered what you guys think is the best tyres for my situation. I appreciate that most tyres will be way beyond my ability. I've searched the forums and there are mixed opinions so thought i'd ask again! Thanks and hello! |
Re: Hello and a question!
In reality anything over current sports touring rubber is wasted on the SV and will only mean more frequent changes, beyond that virtually any major make will be an improvement over the standard OEM tyres, the current crop are Michalin PR3's, pirelli Angel's, Avon Storm 2's, Dunlop roadsmart 2's are all good in their own way, if you want something a bit more affordable then try the Continental roadattack, Pirelli diablio strada,Mezeler Z6 or Maxxis supermaxx range.
All will be an improvement over the d220's and should give between 8-10k miles (depending on riding style and use). Cheers Mark. |
Re: Hello and a question!
Thanks Mark
I had looked at the new Michelin PR 3 but also at the 2CTs with a preference for the latter. |
Re: Hello and a question!
different technology between them I've used the 2CT's on a ktm Superduke, didn't like them, a bit to numb for me but could be interpreted as "confidence inspiring" , however a friend has PR3's on her GSXR6 and I've tried those, I prefer them as they have a bit more feel to then and should out last the 2CT's, having said that, your frame of reference is somewhat different to mine, so either will feel better to use.
Cheers Mark. |
Re: Hello and a question!
For what it's worth I had Dunlop Roadsmart Sportmax on my SV and although I was apprehensive about them at first, they served me really well on both road and the odd trackday.
They never let go once and the wear rate was minimal over the 5,000 miles I did on them I would really recommend these on an SV, but my SV experience is really limited to 8 months. |
Re: Hello and a question!
Thanks all.
I'll do a bit more digging. I did think sports tourers would be the most suitable for the SVs given its not a sports bike but just wanted as much grip as I could. |
Re: Hello and a question!
Bridgestone BT023 on mine and I love em. Good grip in all conditions and I've not found the limit (and don't think I ever will). Done about 2000 miles on them and not a hint of wear.

PR3's for me personally, but tried Pirelli Angels too and got on fine with them.

Re: Hello and which tyres?
As already stated, any of the modern sports touring rubber suggested is more than good enough for the SV. For more on many people's views have a look in the tyre review section here:-
