XBOX Help

Guys, new XBOX 360 at xmas, it's the new shape 250GB model with a Kinect.

As with all things new and IT related it's causing me some headaches.

I am an IT techie, so don't need any help with networking, ping, ftp, etc.

But I do need some help figuring out what I can do with this xbox and what I can't do, as it's totally new territory for me. :compcrash:

The main reason I bought the 250GB hard drive model is I want to use it as my media player, and in doing that it will double up as a backup device for all my music, photos, videos, etc

How do I transfer files to this 250GB hard drive and then access them?

I have connected Windows Media Centre, and I can stream anything, but this doesn't work great with video as I'm on a 802.11g network and all devices are WiFi (I am not prepared to run cables about the house), and doesn't solve the issue of backup up the files. If I could run the video from the xbox HDD, I'd solve the performance and backup issues. I may switch to 802.11n in a month or so when I move house and broadband provider (I currently use my Orange Livebox for the VOIP phone service, so can't just swap to a new router, I may switch phone & broadband provider when I move though).

I've been on Google and read articles that suggest you can transfer from within Media Player / Media Centre - I can't figure this out or find the options in WM12, that these articles refer to in WM11. Both my laptops are Windows 7.

I've also read articles suggesting you can FTP using a username of xbox and a password of xbox. I can't get an FTP client to connect.

I've also read stuff that says I can transfer via USB, but when I go to access a USB device from the xbox, it wants to format it in 'xbox format'. I have 250GB of data on this HDD, don't want to format it. I will copy data off then format it, if formatting it means I can still read and write as normal from the PC. If I can't it doesn't solve my problem of transferring files anyway, it just gives me more xbox storage that I don't need.

I have given the xbox a static 192.168.x.x IP address so I'm not farting around trying to figure out what DHCP address it has picked up. I've read articles that suggest in troubleshooting that I should be able to ping the xbox. I can't but I can ping anything else on the same subnet. Does the xbox respond to echo requests?

Thanks. Does that do everything I want it to do, including copying to the local HDD? Does it stream better over 802.11g?

Tversity will do all that but it's main feature as it will transcode files the OXbox doesn't play on the fly.

This. I use this as well. Means I can keep my media on my PC and just run it over the lan. The main thing is other devices such as mobiles can use it as well.

Re: XBOX Help

PS3 would have been better as a media player due to it's BR + HDD is the same size if not bigger.

Once the Xbox is connected to the PC it should be the simple process of Drag & Drop just like a USB - Computer.

The Media centre runs on standard .wmp, so files that are either .vf & .exe may need to be converted, most files are saved as .wmp anyways or should be unless your running a Mac?

There were other reasons for buying the xbox, but I had a choice between 4GB and 250GB models, and media player & backup was the justification for spending the extra.

Should it show as a drive in Windows explorer?
