Bikesafe

Thinking of doing the Bikesafe course with Cheshire Police this year & wondered if anybody has done it. It's a 1 day course & costs £80. Is it worth the money?

I haven't done the Bikesafe course, but I am an IAM member and have done their course.

In my opinion the IAM courses/training is better but it's more expensive, I'd suggest any advanced training is a good thing, and normally police riders are good lads and will keep it entertaining and you'll have a fun day. I say go for it!

£80? I've booked mine for £20, but then some bikesafe days include track time...

Yes and Yes.

I did it with Merseyside Police in 2008, best £80 I've spent on the bike yet. 2 x days of theory and riding assessment, including a trip to the Ponderosa.

Do it!

I did mine with Leicestershire police in 2010 and it was free!! Was a great day, very informative and was great for police / public relations. Not worth £80 though!

Odd how on the Bikesafe website they list it for £80 as a 1 day course[1], but Cheshire Police have it at £50 and it's held over 3 sessions, which is 2 evening talks and 1 assessed ride[2].

I did it 18 months ago with Cheshire Police (for free, and it was over 3 sessions). It's not worth £80. At £50 it mightn't be too bad but even that seems a bit high in my opinion for what it was. The assessed ride only lasted 40 minutes on roads local to the police station and didn't provide that much feedback. The evening talks were the same as you'd get from reading Roadcraft (which I'd already done).

I've heard better things about the Merseyside Bikesafe[3] held on the Wirral. They host it over 2 days, you get a couple of assessed rides plus a skills session, some basic motorcycle related first aid plus food (Cheshire didn't do anything but the talks and short assessed ride when I did the course). Merseyside is £60 on the Bikesafe site[4].

I can't complain too much about Cheshire's as I got it free, but if it hasn't changed then I couldn't recommend it to you at an £80 cost!

Leicestershire is 1 day, £60 including lunch. Think I might go for this.

How does compare with that DSA enhanced rider scheme?

fyi There's one in the South West that basis itself at Castle Combe Race Circuit. The added attraction of this one is that for an extra £15 or something like that, you get a session on the Track after the Bikesafe bit. The plod don't follow you round the track though ;-)
