Smartphone/contract + ubuntu

Hello folks :)

I'm considering getting a smartphone, I want one that has an organiser that I can access while talking, must have decent satnav software capability (don't mind if I need to add a GPS receiver dongle or whatever).

Internet would be a bonus for checking PMs and such on here.

I'm not sure how it works to sync devices to computer, at the moment I use thunderbird on a ubuntu PC for 3 email boxes, that is likely to increase. Any integration I could get there would be a help to let me keep on top of things.

I want to keep my (O2 PAYG) number too, and not cost the earth. I'm quite happy with O2 in terms of coverage so would be happy to stick with them.

You should have a look at Tesco mobile, they are cheaper than any "mainstream" brand and they use O2's network so you'll get the best of both worlds :)

IOS or Android. Unsure about Ubuntu comparability could quite possibly require hacking your device.

Ubuntu is a nightmare, I used to play with it a little. Seemed like too much hardwork... How come you use it? You could use your device on windows easily and run Ubuntu from a dongle when needed?

Edit: just ask for your PAK code when changing contract and then give that code to the new provider. This will allow you to keep your number. I've had the same number since I was 12!

I use a htc desire, all my email accounts and calenders are on google and it syncs automatically between the phone and google.

I have 4 different domains hosted though google it just works

best way to set things up is to not sync anything with a pc, sync with an internet mail service from both your pc and phone.

As much as it pains me to say it, the other are right use a "cloud" service like google docs / google mail and put everything into that and then just point whatever smartphone you feel like getting at that.

Putting a PC with ubuntu installed on it between your data and your phone is just making life hard for yourself.

As everyone above.

YC have a run into a O2 shop and see what handsets tick your boxes

I have a Desire and its just the way Tim says, only thing to add is that I use docs to go which allows me to open, edit and create office compatible documents when out and about. Very useful for stock control and the like.

As you're a tight as a ducks ar$e Yorkshireman, I'd suggest a Samsung Galaxy Ace on Tesco (O2) for £15 per month.

Daughter has one, it's fast, clever, synchs everything, great coverage, small with a good screen, etc etc etc.

If I hadn't picked myself a Samsung Galaxy S2, I'd have one instead. Ace just as fast in the real world.

Cheap, easy, not complicated.

Just like you!

Pete ;)

More plus points for the choice above - I'm using a HTC desire, a windows laptop or an ubuntu desktop with IMAP + google mail and google calendar to keep things together. When it's time for renewal, I'm going to switch phones and maybe contracts, but everything is synced with the google account and will just continue across to the replacement (just as it did with the upgrade from G1 to desire).
