Repairing crash damage
So, out to the garage this morning to have a fresh look at the damage to the bike after yesterdays little prang and.....not as bad as I'd first thought.
I thought this split was a lot bigger than it actually turned out to be. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs1.jpg Busted brake pedal and a lump missing from the fairing (I'll just dress the shape of the missing bit so it looks like it's meant to flow around the clutch cover) http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs2.jpg Took some wet and dry to the scuffed areas to flatten them prior to priming and rattle can spraying tomorrow. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs4.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs3.jpg Used a soldering iron and some white zip ties to weld the splits up. It doesn't look pretty from the inside but it's solid. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs5.jpg Outside welds looked better once they'd been gone over lightly with a sanding disc. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs6.jpg Black marker pen put the colour back into the fairing bolt covers for now. I'll try and find another cover to replace this badly marked one though. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs9.jpg Temporary repair to the rear brake pedal with a chrome allen bolt, two stainless flange nuts and a piece of black rubber fuel pipe. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs7.jpg Realised when I started trying to find a replacement indicator lens that the ones on my curvy aren't standard. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...shrepairs8.jpg Took me a while to find a match but found a pair of identical indicators for a tenner from Busters. Was going to try and find just the lens but the complete pair was so cheap I just went for them. Hopefully they won't take too long to arrive. So tomorrow it's off to my local motor spares place Marks Auto Accessories for a rattle can of blue. Mark can mix the paint there for me and while it's not a perfect match it's close enough until such time as I can afford a proper respray for the whole bike. The only other thing I shall buy when I can afford it is one of these. They are a bit expensive I suppose, but this is the second time I've busted the brake pedal and one of these might save me from having to stump up for a replacement if I fall off again. |
Re: Repairing crash damage
A Fixer-Peg is less than half that & you can transfer it to your next bike.
And the one after that! |
Re: Repairing crash damage
Good job with the tie wraps. At least the clutch cover survived it! :)

Whats your views on it? Oh and that damage doesn't look to bad from here, fixing it up faster then I would. |

Re: Repairing crash damage
Took the fairing lowers off, filled the gouges and rubbed down with wet and dry.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...hrepairs10.jpg Going to rub the rest of the panel back quickly now ready for a coat of primer. |
Re: Repairing crash damage
Good work, looks tidy so far. You got colour match rattle tin or just close as?

Re: Repairing crash damage
The chap at my local auto spares shop has the spec sheet for mixing paints, including Suzuki's Grand Candy Blue. I've used a mix he's done for me before after my little altercation with a milk tanker about 18 months ago. It's not exactly the same but it is very close and good enough for me for now. I want to get the bike resprayed eventually anyway so this is a temporary(ish!) thing.
Now, a question! White spirit should be ok for degreasing the surface of the panels before I spray them shouldn't it? Edit: OK, going to answer my own question now. Consensus across the various fora to do with spraying and bodywork seems to be that white spirit leaves a residue so meths is what I've used after washing the panels down with Muc Off and clean water. |
