Pointy non runner after valve adjust.
 

Hi,
Model : SV650S 2005
Milage : 17,000

Recently decided to do my valve adjustments myself, all 4 exhaust valve shims needed dropping down a size so I did all that, set it all back exactly how it was and should be, put the engine back in and connected everything back exactly how it was, and now... It's not running.
It sparks, and has fuel going in, and turns over.. But doesn't run.

Anyone with any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the cam timing?

How do you know fuel is going in?

You wired the injectors the right way round?

Checked the cams were in correct positions several times before rebuilding,

New spark plugs had fuel on them, fuel hose had fuel in it, and there was an almighty back fire when I tried starting it.

Injectors weren't removed from the throttle bodies.

Well if it backfired the timing is wrong.

Did you disconnect any of the fuel injection system.

I don't know a lot about engine voodoo but to me a backfire doesn't necessarily mean that the timing is out. Could the backfire not have been caused by a buildup of fuel when the OP was trying to start the bike?

The bike generally backfires a lot, especially with the exhaust system I've got on it.

I took the whole engine out of the bike, so I'm going to go with a yes on that one.

OK well It was running, and now it doesn't

Soooooo .... go over all the connections you have made for fuel and wiring and make sure it's all correct.

The bike has backfired because it has an excess of unburnt fuel caused by the bike not starting

Bike not starting = something wrong

Backfire = fuel and spark but bike wont run

Something wrong = timing

Not rocket science really, it the engine has fuel and ignition and compression and it all happens at the correct times it will run, if it doesn't it wont.

You sure you dont have the timing 180 degrees out on the cams?

It was the exhaust valve shims that needed replacing, I therefore left the inlet cams in, and marked with a permanent marker on the ex cam the exact point where the chain was on the cam so I could put it back exactly how it was. The markings on the cam that are originally there were in the correct position as well.
I cranked it by hand a few times to make sure before I put it all back together. I know for sure this isn't the fault.

I will check all the hoses, wires, etc... Tomorrow.
I'm just not sure how I could've missed something, it's gonna be something really simple, and I'm gonna kick myself for it.
The even more annoying thing is, I'm actually training to be a mechanic (car and bike).

Will update tomorrow when I've had another look.

hhhmmm. 17,000 miles you say and all 4 EX shims need replacing. very much doubt that you should need to replace both heads EX shims at that mileage.

when you removed the cam's did you remove and re-set the camchain adjusters?
