Oil types in regards to clutch drag?

Some have you may of seen me banging on about my clutch drag issue over the years, having changed the lot including basket and still having a problem. Not to mention the shattering of nearly all ebc plates in 24 hours lol.

Well....

I tried Halfords semi-syth and wow, what a difference. After several days of it being it feels completely different, gear changes are like silk :D

Previously i had tried hein gericke and rock oil both semi. The rock oil was hands down the worst, never again. Heine gericke was a tad better.

Anyway i thought i would tell others of my experience, maybe it will help someone else.

I just hope whatever Halfords are bottling remains consistent. Ill still be trying other oils in the future too.

yes the hlafords stuff is good (i think its re-badged castrol) but i prefer Millers having used both.

FYI - Halfords is £26.99 for 5Ltr whereas HG (which I usually use) is £24.99 for 4Ltr.

Gonna try the Halfords next methinks.

The car forums think that Halfords oil is made by Comma rather than Castrol. Anyway, Halford full Synthetic works for me.

I heard that too MJC-DEV, handy it being 5 litres too, a bit left over for topping up if you need to between services.

i had a really bad experience with castrol: they're definitely no more the top end in oils... but i found the peace of senses with the bardahl xtc-60! i'm using this one only since 2003 and after more than 100k km the engine it's still awesomely regular, as my clutch!

I used HG 10W50 fully synthetic in my RSV and it greatly improved the ability to find neutral. It's still slightly tricky when the engines cold, but I find a gentle tap down from 2nd will usually do it. With the oil that was in it when I bought it (don't know the grade or manufacturer) trying to find neutral with a cold engine was a pointless exercise. I notice HG have put the price of the 10W50 up a lot since I bought it though.

Fitting a new clutch slave cylinder also gave a further improvement, even though my old one wasn't leaking. That said I flushed it through twice with fresh fluid, and each time the fluid in the reservoir was black within the week of use so the seals were obviously not healthy. 6 months of use with the new slave and the fluid is still clean.

There is also an oil jet that can be changed which supplies oil to the inside of the clutch - this jet was made small on later bikes to restrict the amount of oil flow and this also helps finding neutral.
