Bent gear linkage.
hi can any one tell me , my gear linkage bar seems a wee bit bent and wee bit slack , the gears change fine with out any problems at all , but was wondering should this be bent or stright with no play , its on a sv650s 1000 curv bike , thanks for any help again :)

Re: gear linkage bar
the bar is supposed to be straight, just stick it in a vice and straighten it, it has a LH & RH thread on it, so undo the lock nuts (one turns the other way) and rotate the rod, this will adjust the level of the gear lever, then tighten everything again, there is a little play in the joints at both ends normally.

Re: gear linkage bar
I've just been outside and measured the up and down movement of the gear lever on my 6mth old sv650s, 2500miles. It has just under 2mm of movement. I guess you can say thats what they are when new, might help to determine how loose yours is.
Silly to ask, but is the 10mm bolt tight that clamps the linkage onto the selector shaft? |
Re: gear linkage bar
hi , yes it is tight , dont think its much more play than your saying yours is ,there is just a very wee bend in the rod , this is my first bike , just looking it over today we a mate that knows about bikes and he wasnt sure if the bend in the bar was normal on the sv . i will strighten it just hope its not to long when i do , the gears change fine with no problem , but thought id find out as away to do oil and filter change and air filter change , as not sure when it was last done . thanks very much for all your help

Re: Bent gear linkage.
Won't do any harm to leave it tbh, also, congrats on choosing an Sv as your first bike, they're really good all rounders!

Re: Bent gear linkage.
Wonder how it got bent? Assume the previous owner let you know about any 'crash' damage?

Re: Bent gear linkage.
I bent mine slightly just by having clumsy feet but remedy was as described above
