Americans, Help please

I know there are a few of you lurking on here from The US of A.
My brother stays in the states and i'm helping him replace his Kitchen, I've a couple of questions around the electrics as they are signifficantly different from the UK set up. I think i've got it sussed but would like to be 100%
So if any of you are electricians / contractors or Just good DIY bods please give me a shout.

Its a 50 year old apartment with ALU wiring which has been pig tailed.
My first job will be to identify the circuits in the switch board as none of them are marked up.

I've been reading the wiring guidelines etc online but its always better to get some first hand info.

Thanks

I'm in Canada and its the same.

The Pig tails have to be to copper using the correct Morrett and joining paste for Alu.

I use a light terminal with a bulb in it and throw the fuses till it comes on (with them all off).

and I've only seen one decently labelled fuse board in the last two years. The rest were rubbish!
