Trike - higher ratio differential?
right want to up gear gems trike as first is redundant
it seems that the easyest way to do this is to change the rear diff for one with a better ratio its a ford sierra atm and would surmise that id still need to use a sierra dif but a higher ratioed one my question is how do i check which is in it and how would i find out which is geared higher is there anything i could be missing here eg will i have to change the drive shaft etc dave |
Re: trike diff
Daft question... what size wheels are you running? Bigger wheels should knock the acceleration down in favour of a higher top speed, if I remember the way we were thinking on the project in the garage.

Re: trike diff
well the normal way to identify the diff ratio would be to look up the make and model and year, however that maybe a little difficult, but you should be able to find the type (shape and fixing etc) by comparison, in order to get the ratio the diff is set to, put a mark in the intake flange (where the propshaft fits) and the outlet (where drive shaft fits), rotate the driveshaft flange a complete turn and count how many (or part there of) rotations of the propshaft flange, this will give the ratio you currently have.

Re: trike diff
might be better asking on one of those weird ford owners club forums.

Re: Trike - higher ratio differential?
so half bike trike and not one of those vw things.
from what i remember from my cortina/escort days it's possible to change the final ring and pinion in the diff housing. common mod with escorts. i found this if it's any use. http://www.super7thheaven.co.uk/Sier...r_Differential might be worth giving these people a phone. http://www.quaife.co.uk/ |
Re: Trike - higher ratio differential?
normally the "economy" models have a higher diff ratio than the sporty stuff.

Re: Trike - higher ratio differential?
photograph and serial or model number markings on the diff, get on www.Locostbuilders.co.uk and post said pictures along with any info you may have as to the origin of the diff...........
People on there will argue til the world ends as to which diff it is, and more helpfully will advise on a better ratio diff. :) |
Re: Trike - higher ratio differential?
Just SOMETIMES ratios are stamped on diff carriers.
9/27 or 9:27 would give 3 to 1 |
