K5 pointy starting problems
Hi Guys
I am having problems starting my K5. It has been dorment since the end of last year and when I tried starting it a couple of weeks ago the battery was completely dead. For info there is a alarm/immobiliser which I assume has drained everything. It has an aftermarket exhaust but no other mods. Before putting it away last winter I never had a problem with it starting in the 12 months I had owned it. I bought an Optimate 4 last week and have been spending the last couple of days with it hooked up to the battery off the bike. I havent been able to leave in on constantly but has probably had circa 8hrs charge over two days. I put the battery in the bike a moment ago and things arent as expected. There is power now however all that came on where the green light for neutral and both indicator lights on the display which were constantly flashing. Nothing comes up on the speedo/display. If I try and start the bike there is a nasty sounding whirling noice which comes from the battery, but nothing else. I followed the Haynes guide to remove and install the battery which was a fairly simple process. I have limited experience fixing bikes so I dont know what to do next. I am hoping someone has had this problem before that might be able to help. Any help will be gratefully recieved. Thanks Dwhitt |
Re: K5 pointy starting problems
Is that whilring noise more of a clicking noise? if so that sound is more likely the relay clicking meaning you dont have enough battery
Sounds to me you have a duff battery, I recommend getting a new battery and trying again. My 650 had a battery that after i accidently left the bike on all night on killswitch the day after it wouldnt take a charge and left me bump starting the bloody thing everywhere. |
Re: K5 pointy starting problems
I was afraid that might be the problem. Do you know the best place to get a new battery and how much I am looking at for a replacement?
Cheers |

Have a look at MDS http://www.mdsbattery.co.uk/
Batteryman on this forum will help you out. AmigaNut P.S. A clicking noise certainly points to lack of juice from the battery. |

Re: K5 pointy starting problems
It may be an immobiliser thing, but I do know that batteries often have a lower voltage limit, which if reached, never charge up again properly. A completely drained battery often needs replacing.

Re: K5 pointy starting problems
Thanks for all your comments.
It is a clicking noise that comes from the battery. I might give it another session charging over the next couple of days and see if that helps. If not I will get a new battery. |
Re: K5 pointy starting problems
and work out how to reset the alarm!

Re: K5 pointy starting problems
I go away for months at a time and just disconnect the battery in my car when I do.
You could do the same on the bike if you are going to leave it for ages. Yeah, you don't get the alarm, but you don't when the battery drains either. |
Re: K5 pointy starting problems
hook it up to your car with some jump leads. You should be able to get it running, almost certainly a duff battery though.
