New DVLA Rules from 19/01/13

Firstly, if this has been discussed, link to the original thread please, I must have missed it.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...sing/DG_201188

Category A2 (medium motorcycles up to 35 kW)
Category A2 covers medium sized bikes, with or without a sidecar, which have:
an engine power output not more than 35 kW
a power to weight ratio not more than 0.2 kW per kg - the bike must also not be derived from a vehicle of more than double its power
The minimum age for category A2 is 19 years.
There are two ways to get this entitlement.
Direct access
If you you're aged 19 or over, you can take a theory and a practical test.
Staged access
If you're aged 19 or over and you have two years' experience on an A1 motorcycle, you can take the practical test.

Category A
Category A covers machines unlimited in size and power, with or without a sidecar, and motor tricycles with a power output of more than 15 kW. There are two ways to get this entitlement.
Direct access
If you don't have two years' experience, you'll have to be aged 24 years or over. You'll also need to pass the theory and practical tests.
Staged access
You can get this category from age 21 if you have two years' experience on an A2 motorcycle and you pass a further practical test.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I passed my A2 at 17, a day after my 17th birthday, rode restricted for 2 years, then I obtained a full 'license' (with no tests or paperwork) a day after my 19th birthday. :D

If I am reading this right, I would now have to be 19 to take the A2, and would only get to ride a 'full power' bike 2 years later at 21, after I have passed a FURTHER practical test? :smt107

But you are now restricted to 35kW instead of 25kW??

Also the new minimum age for passing you're A (full) test if now 24?

Some changes there. I'm sure they know what they're doing.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

On a serious note. Some changes there. I'm sure they know what they're doing.

Yes yes, I know :P

Got used to using 2012 finally, it comes naturally now! :smt075

Why not?

I read it as the original bike's output must not be double the NEW restricted value of 35kW, ~47bhp, so the original bike cannot have a output of 70kW, ~92bhp or more.

0.2kW/kg, the 2011 SV650S has a dry weight of 168kg, say the bike is restricted to 33bhp (~25kW) means a restricted SV has a power/weight ratio of ~0.15kW/kg.

Could be helpful for new riders coming through and thinking of an SV as their first big bike?
