"Microsoft" support scam

Just had another phone call from some place in India pretending to be Microsoft support saying they can help with the errors my computer is having.

Just because I was a bit bored and fancied wasting their time I played along. They get you to look for some files which are perfectly normal then tell you they are the cause of the error and you need to buy their software to fix it.

I am not sure what the software does but it's probably just an malware scanner you can get for free elsewhere but it could be something more dangerous.

When I started asking for the company address and stuff they hung up on me.

I had this about three weeks ago. I had the guy utterly and completely baffled with the gibberish I was speaking and ended up selling him the phone I was using, but he had to come and pick it up! :-))

after an hour he still had no idea what was happening so I just kept talking about completely random stuff. If he's on the phone to me, he's not scamming other people. and I kept switching to German.

oh, and I described every single internal part of my Dell laptop but reversed every detail.

He gave up after about 1hour 45 minutes :-)

Haha, in the end I did the same, I told her I was using Windows 1 on my Babbage difference engine. She didn't quite know what to say to that.

If it's a mk.1 and you want to upgrade it, I have a spare set of decade setwheels from a mk.2 going cheap, but you would need the special fitting tool which I can let you have for £19 3s 11d ;)

Happened to me a couple of weeks back, I got bored of baiting them after 30 mins.

Pity my dad hadn't listened to me about 6 weeks ago when spoke to them.

Still, thanks to the distance my Bro-in-law had to do the re-install.

My dad wasn't impressed about having to change all his passwords and get new Credit/Debit cards tho

you should be cautious playing along, another equally successful scam allows them to bill your account for the call. Best to hang up.

Had a call from'virgin media' [who provide my int., & tv] a few months ago, asking me to fire up my computer and log on as there was a problem with something or other. When i said i couldn't at the moment, this person got quite 'shirty', which ran the alarm bells,so i hung up and phoned Virgin straight away, they said they hadn't phoned me,and that it was a scam.and blocked the No., and others like it from phoning me again......well 'till they change their No., anyway.
