ZX12R Neutral light problems

A very dear friend of ours asked us for help with his ZX12R Special today, so armed with Carol's multi meter and a good idea, we headed over to Wayne's.

The problem is that the Neutral light keeps coming on, even when in gear. All of the wires were checked and every junction and join checked and rechecked and yet it still refused to be diagnosed. Finally We ended up chasing the wiring down through the diagram in the book while tracking it on the bike and got to the fuse box. Inside this are three in line diodes.

Who ever bothers to open up the lectrical boxes to check solid state components? Glad that we did, one of the Diodes had split open and when we checked it, was carrying current in both directions. Hopefully we have identified the fault and our dear friend Wayne can put his bike back together again.

In case you want to see his bike, it is in this months Performance Bikes and is even more gorgeous in the flesh (metal does not apply to a bike that looks this evil and organic!).

Hey I'm impressed, that's a fairly obscure one to find; well done, most would have stopped at the box and just looked to replace it, the advantages of a systematic diagnostic approach, nice one.

Cheers Mark.

Time for an update, we had a phone call from Wayne today with good news. The faulty diode was indeed the cause and all is working again, the bike is now fixed and back to full power. Always nice when a difficult fault is found and repaired. :D

Cause = Symptom. Discuss.

Jayne, top marks to you, Carol & the multi-meter for finding a fairly obscure problem!

Re: ZX12R Neutral light problems

I have some irritating news to report on this bike and my friend Wayne who has once again done the same thing that he did to his ZX10R once he finished it.

With the ZX10R, he rebuilt it and replaced every bolt with titanium or stainless, replaced the fairing with carbon and rebuilt the engine with a balanced crank and lots of other mods. He crashed it after a month and wrote it off. A ten grand bike with twenty five grand worth of mods on it and third party insurance only!

The red ZX12R is now a ZX13R with a similar state of tuning that the other bike had. In the very same place that he crashed the black one, he slide the red one up the road. Initial reports say that the bike is another write off, Wayne has another broken wrist and he has basically thrown away twenty grand that he saved up for the project that he has now also broken.

Carol and I just do not know what to say to him. Part of me is really angry because I think that my friend was riding recklessly again after he promised to be more careful and part of me wants to shake him and shout at him to wake up!

The last crash put him in hospital for several weeks where he was unconscious for a worryingly long time. He broke his pelvis, wrist and hand. This time it is just his wrist and hand and he is now out of hospital. He has told Carol that he is now giving up on bikes.

This makes me very sad, not that he is giving up, but that he has done this to himself by being a loon. At least he is still alive, but at what cost both financially and psychologically? I do wonder who scraped him up this time. The worst part of it is that he was supposed to meet us both at Bike Night on Thursday, just like last time. When he failed to turn up, Carol wondered if it was because the weather had turned cold or because he had crashed again.

Next time I see him, I shall be having words. What a waste.
