Chain snapped
 

My chain has just snapped on the A329 and oil is coming out from around the sprocket area. Life sucks by the side of the road, but here's to a rebuild thread!

well I've a suspicion why, but as for the oil leak, if you're lucky it's just the clutch transfer rod snapped and the hole it goes in leaking, if not you've done damage to the casing itself, unfortunately the chain/ rod or casing aren't fixable at the side of the road, hope you have recovery or know a man with a van.

Mark, chain was well lubed, adjusted correctly and was replaced just before I got the bike and hasn't done more than 4000 miles. I can't think of a reason, but I am willing to bow to superior knowledge:)

I'm assuming the fact your'e typing on your phone casually means you came to a nice steady hault ...somehow..?

when was the last time it was looked at mileage and and time?, have you had to adjust it recently? was it endless of riveted ?, I've never found a chain to just "fail" in recent years, in fact most "O" rings are warrented for at least a year or 12,000 miles, was it fitted by a dealer ?

Yep:) boy do I feel lucky !!!

Heard a bang, instantly grabbed the clutch, nothing,looked in my mirror and saw smoke so hit the kill switch and pulled to the side:)

I had my rear wheel out about 3 weeks ago so was cleaned in paraffin and heavily lubed with scottoiler oil and adjusted then. I checked it and lubed it on Sunday. Will have to check on the paperwork when exactly I was fitted but I think it was a dealer as it has full dealer history. I can only think it is because I had a split link not a rivet link.

was it fitted with a scottoiler or just that oil used ?, whilst I myself wouldn't recommend a split (or spring) link, as long as the spring part was still on it shouldn't have broken, normally if all else is good about the chain and it was manually lubed it means a link was missed, it drys and stiffens up and then it runs hot and that will be the point of weakness, the rest of the chain can be perfect, but without the chain it's just a guess all be it an educated one.
