I can't get insurance even with 2 Years NCB

Hello,

I'm 18 years old, been riding since my 16th birthday continuously, on a 50cc, 125cc then a SV650S K3 since september. In total i've been riding for nearly 2 years and a half years. Insurance for me was £503 on the SV TPFT. I'm looking to upgrade (or downgrade depending on how you look at it) to a '09 ZX6R. I've got a very reasonable finance deal waiting for me so I went and got quotes....

.....Cutting it short, I edited a previous quote just changing the bike and adding security items. No quotes from GoCompare, MCN, Carol Nash and my current insurer eBike. :pale:

I then changed from Student to Technical Engineer in Medical Research (what i will be doing in the next month or so) and still nothing. Changed mileage, policy cover, and just about everything else... Am I doing something wrong or can I just simply not get insurance for that bike at my age?

Thank you if you can help, I really want this bike !!

I would Google for "specialist motorbike insurance broker" or similar, and see what you come up with. There will be a specialist policy for you. Make sure you post up the premium you're quoted though for entertainment value!!! ;)

A-Plan may be a good shout btw. They do lots of specialist insurance policies. I used them for an important car once and were very cheap. They may also do bike related stuff.

Nah no chance mate at 18, even with no claims. I think I had a look for when I'd be 19/20 and then I can start getting quotes, but still over the £600 mark

I wouldn't mind £800 to be honest with you guys, I've outgrown the SV and this ZX6 seems like a good deal.

@'Fallout'... I tried what you said, Bikesure won't insure me even on a specialist and A-Plan will be calling me probably monday to discuss the finer details. Will keep you posted on the comedy price they issue me with !!

The only other thing is, if I take out a new policy I've effectively lost the £500 I paid upfront for my SV's insurance with only 6 months use from it. The bigger frustration for me is that I've ridden for 2 and a half years without a claim, riding all year round in sun, snow and ice covering over 30,000 miles in that time.

if you paid upfront then they have to give refund. its only when you pay by DD they can refuse.

don't know if kawasaki do insurance but if they do you could try them.

i don't understand what you mean by 'outgrown' the SV.

+1 on what Bibio says.

You are 18?

You list your SV as being restricted, why not get it unrestricted? It will be cheaper and will probably show you are nit as outgrown of the SV as you think you are.

Why do you need/want the Ninja so much, what will it add to your life?

I don't know you, so have to generalise, like the insurance companies, but generally, teenagers on 100bhp+ motorbikes are not thinking with their brains, but with other bodyparts.

Ride your SV, get an assessment dine of your riding, there's plenty of time to get on big powerful bikes when they are affordable, you have years of riding ahead of you.

Although I agree with every word of the above, I have to say that when I was 18 I was in a hurry and wanted everything NOW.

I think that we all did, its just that when you have had the same time again to think it over, what your Dad said at the time starts to sound sensible :p

It really should be the other way around. Now we're getting old and mere inches away from falling into a nicely dug hole in the ground, we should be desperate to get everything NOW! 18 year olds don't need to be in a rush, the youthful stewards! :)

@BlackFlag94 - I really liked dealing with A-Plan. All the brokers come across as young gents and you can have a bit of banter with them normally. They have loads of specialist policies so may be able to help you. If you try and get bog standard insurance with them, they're way more expensive (twice as much normally), but specialist circumstances, they are the best. I had a Japanese import Skyline which was quoted as £1000-£2000 everywhere, but A-Plan did it for £500 in the end.
