your views on vtr1000?

I know nothing about them, heard theyre quite thirsty, but how does that compare to the sv650, obviously there going to use a bit more.

Whos got one, or had one, whats the good bits, and the bad bits?

thanks org

Rode the vtr1000 and sp1. Both epic.

Thought about the vtr myself it's a stunner to ride just that seat/tail/rear light put me off.

Great bike. Had my firestorm from new back in 2000, Never had any problems with it. They are thirsty, struggle to get 70 miles from a full tank if i send it on till fuel light comes on. (16 litre tank of which i think about 2-3 litres are left once fuel light on.) steady use of throttle will see 85-90 miles,

Front forks are soft,

Until I put a spacer under rear shock mount to speed up steering it was always feeling as if it wanted to run wide and not change direction in corners if needed.

Sv handles better,

as to bad points the vtr 1000 firestorm, would be camchain tensioners,if they break they can total a top end or worse, most people convert them to a manual adjuster, but unlike most manual adjusters the conversion ive seen uses the original tensioner with a bolt and locknut replacing the spring,id go for the sp2(or sp1 at a push) in my view the best v twin ever made, and shares almost nothing in common with the lesser firestorm, not as much hp as more modern bikes(only about 170mph) but will out last any ducati and doesn't sound like a bag of nails

Had one new in 1998 - don't regret buying it, don't regret selling it. I think, looking back on it, that it was probably the most uninspiring litre bike I've ever owned.

My friend Karen has one, it's just lunched its engine when the front camchain tensioner let go. Apparently this isn't uncommon on them. Mine ate its water pump within 3 weeks of new but that was done under warranty. Other than that it gave me no trouble.

It drank fuel at an alarming rate, or should that be a friggin' stupidly alarming rate. I never dared do more than 110 miles before filling up and the reserve light had been for a little while by then. On one memorable occasion I managed to drain the tank completely in 63 miles, or just over 1 1/2 hours of playing at nutters on back roads with a Duc 900SS and a TL1000S (which ate its rear tyre but still didn't get close to me and the 900SS cos the handling was abysmal). Funnily enough the Firestorm didn't handle that brilliantly either, but it was much easier to ride fast than a TL.

Like I say, I don't regret buying it but wish I'd bought the Ducati 900SS FE (Final Edition) I was looking at instead.
