Sharp teeth on my curvy's clutch
I've noticed more & more lately that the clutch on my curvy is grabbing/biting on the initial pull-away. I've noticed it for a while now, but it seems to be getting more pronounced (unless I'm imagining it getting worse).
It only really happens when the engine is cold (the first ride of the day), after that, it seems better. It also only happens when pulling away from standstill. I've been consciously checking my clutch control, & it's definitely not that my left hand is too erratic. I get the clutch to the biting point & things are fine, 1 mm further & I'm gone - without any smooth acceleration. Does this indicate that the clutch needs adjustment, or that it's in need of replacement? Any help would be good here as I'm starting to look like I can't ride a bike whenever I leave the house & my neighbours are looking out of the window. I've bookmarked Anna's amazing illustrated thread on clutch adjustment, so that may be the next step. |

Can also be cable sticky

Re: Sharp teeth on my curvy's clutch
The movement of the clutch lever seems pretty smooth, but I'll check that first, thanks.

Re: Sharp teeth on my curvy's clutch
Yeah just if they stick on the release for half a second or so it can give you that effect. But a notched basket or hub or damaged plates can cause the same.

Re: Sharp teeth on my curvy's clutch
What do you recommend that I lubricate the cable with? Lithium/Silicone grease, oil, or something viscose like WD40? I've also read somewhere that the ball end at the lever should be greased.

Re: Sharp teeth on my curvy's clutch
OK. I've adjusted the clutch step by step, following Anna, Sid Squid & Rictus' thread. The feel of the clutch is really good now & nowhere near as much 'grab' as before. On the downside... I've noticed that the cable (just by the lever) is just starting to frey. So a new cable is next on the shopping list.
Thanks for all the advice, not just with the clutch, but with all the other help threads. |
Re: Sharp teeth on my curvy's clutch
I was told that any sort of 3 in 1 Lube is good for it
