What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
I've always wondered how many drivers actually hate us filtering past them. Quite a lot of people post about accidents and incidents where road users get pished off with them. For the most part though, I don't seem to have had any problems. On monday there was one person who seemed to purposefully pull across their lane to make it harder for me to get past (made no difference!), but far more often people pull across to the curb to give me space. So in my experience, for the most part, people either don't seem bothered, or are actually happy to give me space.
So I propose a poll to see what other people think, and invite your comments about how much you think the practice is accepted or hated! Edit: ALSO, it may be interesting to post your location, as I suspect people behave differently in different areas of the country. I do mostly rural / suburban riding in the south. |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
As a car driver I move over if I can and for simple overtakes use my LHS indicator if the road ahead is clear and to let them know I have seen them.
As a bike rider I have been taken off twice filtering by people changing lane without signals. I am very wary filtering and tend to only filter through near stationary traffic now[20mph] max. I am very cautious if a gap appears in any lane and expect some numpity to try and dive into it. I is a wimp. |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
I'd say most of them hate it even those that do nothing about it.
My mum always says that bikes come out of nowhere and blast past her... Tried to point out that they don't come out of nowhere, just somewhere she wasnt looking so dont blame me if she takes you out, I can assure you it'll be accidental. |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
When I lived north of Cardiff my daily run was up and down the A470 through North Cardiff.
Drivers around there hate people filtering because it is always busy on the stretch of road. I had a guy in a Ford Mondeo try and block me in between his car and the Ford Fiesta next to him, I just managed to squeeze through, but, was tight. Had many do similar things, or, purposefully make the gap between their car and the car next to their’s very small. They do the same in and around Gt Yarmouth. I am always looking out for bikers on the A12 section by my work, I am always driving with my wheels in the near side or off side gutter as to leave gaps, but, can look behind me and see cars with their wheels running along the white line |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
only time i get people deliberately blocking my path is in edinburgh or glasgow, fife on the other hand is like the parting of the waves :-)
the rush hours excluding the forth bridge are almost non existent and usually entail a line of about 10 cars at traffic lights. get past the central belt and it's a case of 'what traffic' :-) |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
I love it when people in moving traffic try to squeese my filtering lane.
Theres so few of them that have the ability or bottle to close the space to something I wouldnt ram a bike through. |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
Filtering in Germany on the autobahn I'd say 99.9% let you through (and move over even further than you'd expect/need). But one guy moved over to block a bike ahead of me that I was catching up. But by doing this meant he'd left enough space to the opposite side to go between him and the central reservation barrier... so I did that. He wasn't too impressed :D
Over here I find the general attitude to bikers a lot worse, but then I'd also say the standard of riding / filtering over here is a lot lower (especially around the M25 for example compared to somewhere like the Brussels ring road) so for me it's relative. |
Re: What proportion of car drivers hate filtering?
low speeds most seam ok with sitting in there lane .
More people block you on dual A roads when your doing the correct speed not what there over optimistic speedo reads or they are saving fuel speed is. |

No one really minds people filtering with care and consideration but it's the tits that do it at speed I've got an issue with.
