Blow out yesterday

Been for a little camping down Preston on wye, on way down yesterday, doing 70 ish, suddenly back end comes round on me at an angle while going in a straight line, I didn't panic or brake, just tried to keep it straight and slow down gradually, really thought I was gonna be Tarmac surfing at one point.

Anyway after inspection, found my valve had completely blew out of my rear tube, followed by rapid deflation, no warning whatsoever.

Aliwakeskate helped me change on the side of the road, luckily there was a bike shop 3 miles away, within about a hour or so we had it fixed.

Re: Blow out yesterday

Seen this before think it is caused by tube spinning on rim and that chomps the valve like a cigar cutter.

Well done keeping it upright

Actually Chris, it looked like the tube blew the valve out, the hole was perfect and still had the washer attached to the valve which would normally be on the inside.

I will consider a rim lock tbh, wouldnt fancy going through that again too soon.

That above said, posted this on the abr forum and a guy said vee tubes seem to do this more and he knows of three cases like this, I didn't note the brand tbh before I chucked it.

Re: Blow out yesterday

I always used a rimlock with my enduro bikes when out green laning...running low psi causes the tyre to creep round the rim, bringing the tube with it. also, if the new valve has a nut that you`d normally tighten down onto the rim, dont....tighten it under the valve cap or remove it all together...it allows the tube and valve to move a little without damage.

Re: Blow out yesterday

Rimlocks can give off serious vibes when getting over 40mph. This can be cured with a silly amount of balance weights on the rim or drill another hole and run two rimlocks half way round the rim to balance it out.

Yes I agree :)

I don't run low pressures so I don't think it's that what caused my issue.

It's the unbalance (inbalance?) of rim locks that puts me off tbh, I am going to consider them though.
