motability or not motability?

Right ,a couple of days ago there was a bit of chat in idle banter about Motability and there is also a thread going around about second hand cars .The question is , which is , in your opinion the best way to go .
If you dont know anything about it , then I will explain quickly how it works.Disability living allowance(dla) is paid in two sections. An amount to help with personal care , and an amount to help getting around .If you get the higher rate for getting around £51.85 per week , then you can exchange that for a car from motability. Some cars need a deposit while others dont.We currantly have a Vauxhall 1.7 SRI that required no deposite. For the money you get a new car every 3 years , insurance , tax , servicing, repairs , tyres and a 60,000 mile limit plus special RAC cover. At the end of 3 yrs you can simply replace it for a new one or give it back. That works out at an average of £222 a month based on a 30 day month.
Now this is the situation , the car is in my ex's name because the DLA for my son was in her name. The DLA is now in my name so because I didnt sign the contract , I can return the car if I want to .
I have a newish 3 seater van at the moment which is paid for ,so should I send back the car and keep the £222 a month towards running my van , or sell the van and keep the car. There are only 3 of us ,so the van will do nicely for now.
One more thing , at the moment the ex has limited access to see my son , if she ends up with an over night access then she can take the motability car and leave me without transport.
Thoughts would be welcome ,incasse Ive missed anything.
Gid
Damn sure it will not cost me £ 222 a month to tax , ins and mot my van ,unless of course something drastic happens

Re: motability or not motability?

it's ok m8 we all make mistakes. just for reference what was i wrong about?

if you get higher rate then you don't need to pay road tax.

if the van is paid for then you can look to buy a newer car using the van as a deposit. motability will pay for a car that is upto 3 years old. so say van is worth £3k? and new car is £6k then you pay the £3k over the three years (which will work out to about £77 a month as its a 13 month year) via motability and at the end the car is yours.

i know some people love motability cars but personally i don't like it as i find it to restricting.
