Have you checked the easy bits first? Is the drive cable conncected properly at both ends for instance?

Is the SV a magnettic wheel type or front sprocket reading type? Have you changed chain and sprockets recently or done any work on that side of the bike? Connections may have come loose. As trev said check the cable. I've had the same problem since I changed the chain + sprockets and turned out to be a loose connection, probably caused by tugging the wires about when I was doing the work.

My money is on the plastic bit inside the speedo drive on the front wheel, not unknown for it to break up.

That the rotor bit? #testingmysoundmechanicalknowledge# That was one of the first things to go on my SV when I got it, think they have a tendency to break up like you say. Don't remember it costing much to replace though.

Especially if the front wheel has been out for any reason recently. Its very easy to damage the rotor when putting the wheel back.
