SV front brake lever - which others fit?
 

In the latest in a never-ending series of winter faults and niggles which have wiped out my weekends and blighted my nights, my front brake lever started sticking on since I had a low-speed spill in the snow the other week.

Cleaned and greased the pivot - all seemed OK - then as I was tightening the bolt the feckin lever snapped. Had obviously been weakened and bent in the crash.

Glad it broke then rather than when I was actually riding but I could cry - can borrow the car tomorrow but not on Thurs when I've got a 200-mile journey to do with work. Would chance it but the rear brake is pretty much out of action pending a refurb to stop it binding - I know the engine braking on an SV is pretty good but that's pushing it.

Banking on a mechanic I know having something in stock which will do the job till one off ebay arrives - anyone know if levers from other makes and models will fit? Or anyone selling one I can pick up in the Cheshire/Merseyside areas tomorrow?

The lever from lots of bikes fit, it's a very, very common master cylinder. Plenty of Suzuki and Kawasaki bikes including zx6r 98-02 for sure, I'd expect bandits and GSXRs of the same age to be the same. If you have a local parts breaker or dealer you should be fine.

Cheers Jambo - much appreciated, thought as much but couldn't seem to find out via Google. Currently ringing round bike shops and breakers to see if I can pick one up on the way into work.

Could always try superglue if not. :-)

All I will say is "Do NOT chance it" better to wait till you have a working set of brakes.
I would never contemplate riding or driving a vehicle that I know has defective brakes and considering the weather conditions currently I mean both brakes on the bike.

Bit harsh blaming the bike after all it was you that had the spill in the snow-------------being a hero is fine but be careful please

I know - tongue was firmly in cheek when I said about riding with no brakes.

And while I can't blame the bike for the spill in the snow (was turning round to go home as I realised it was too bad) I can blame Mr Suzuki for putting cheap-ass fixtures and fittings on the SV which constantly need attention.

I think every all-weather rider has moments when you wonder whether all the constant cleaning, maintainance and fiddling with gear is worth it when running a cheap little car would be so much easier. Then I think 55mpg, 0-60 in 4, filtering, the general awesomeness of riding...nah I'll stick with the bike.

Off the top of my head, the following uses the same lever
ZX6 98-02
SRAD Gsxr
K1-3 Gsxr 600/750
MK2 Bandits 2000 onwards

The M/C a Nissin unit and a lot of bikes used the same one (or a similar varient) from the late 90's onwards

Cheers andrew. In case it helps anyone in future, the part no ends in 535250.

Ended up getting an oem part from a main dealer as no-one else nearby had one in stock. At almost 30 quid it was twice the price of something off ebay but feels better quality. Hopefully it'll be a bit more shock resistant too.
