Oil change - how much oil?
 

Hi all,
Could any one let me know how much oil an sv 650 takes to fill on an oil change please.
Im going to change it this week but I don't have a manual so would like to know how much to buy please..

If I remember correctly, it's cast in the engine casing, but off hand I think it's 2300ml

Depends on whether filter being changed. Pointy is 2.3l without filter, 2.5l with filter and 3l with dry engine (e.g. after rebuild). Really important to get all the oil out so warm up the bike first. Also don't fill it all straight away. Put most of the oil in and check the glass. If its indicating its at the right level but not all the oil is in, run the engine for a little to let the oil level settle. Check the glass and if necessary put the rest in. If you had drained it properly it should take the full 2.3l.

I think 2.3 might be to the minimum mark or something, always seems a bit short and I fill from a 25l drum and a 1l gradated jug.
If you've got 3l on hand for the job that's plenty.

I rarely bother changing just the oil, filters are cheap enough.

I fill to max line and sometimes a touch over, then run it a bit*, let it stand a while then top up.


*If I am changing plugs, I disconnect coils or earth plugs and do this with plugs out until oil light goes out, that way there is no compression stress on dry bearings.

I don't always warm it up, I don't like getting burnt by 90 degree oil, or starting bikes up if I'm not going to ride them.

Cold oil just flows a bit slower, but you're not in a rush so just give it an extra 5 minutes to drain.

90 degrees? Nah man, just so its warm and flows easier. 5 minutes. Was advised this was better especially in the cold. I do the change outside and the oil can get pretty cold otherwise and suggestion was the oil will drain better. Suppose it doesn't matter cold or hot as long as its all out.

You'll never get it all out, it's not massively important to get every last drop out... because you never will.

For my logic (including the snowdrift inside the garage yesterday...), the extra wear and tear of a cold start outweighs the marginal benefits of the oil draining out slightly faster.

It does definitely drain better, but you won't get any more of it out than by just using patience.

I think its 2500ml to full mark.
TBH on the change I fill it up to full crank it and re-check it a couple of times to make sure. Oil and filter seemed to be closer to 3l on the last one and its just over the F mark

Confused by this Im not bad with the spanners but im far from a mechanic:(


Im changing the plugs to try and stretch a few more mpg out the old girl as I have swapped washers and throttle stop for a restricted ecu but at the mo no improvement on mpg.
Just thought I would do the oil as I was there so to speak wasn't going to do the filter as it was serviced by the dealer before I got her that was late October, do you guys think I should I have only put about 2,5 tho on the clock.
