Pirelli Diablo Strada v Michelin PR2's
 

I am reading tyre reviews and cannot believe the mileage folks get out of tyre's! I am lucky to get 5k out of a rear. Got a Michelin PR3 on the back at the moment and it is ragged after 3.5K!!! For some reason I am very hard on tyre's - not that quick so don't really rag the hell out of them????

But a nail in that has killed off the PR3 on the rear and my Avon storm on the front is due for replacement anyway.

So - impressed with the grip on the PR3 but not the tyre life - squared off and edges looked seriously chewed up and torn - so won't be getting them again and not at that price, not for 3.5k miles.

Can get a pair of Pirelli Diablo Strada's @ £157 or PR2's @ £172. (£15 difference, save you thinking)

Are the Strada's OK? Am not that quick a rider and don't really hoon about, so think if they are reasonably decent handling tyre and improved life might suit me or do I spend the wee bit more and get the PR2's? Been put off michelin by poor tyre life of PR3.

Anybody tried both of these tyre's and offer comparison?

You need to be smooth to get good mileage.
I can't get any more than 3,500 out of a rear so your not alone.
Michelin make some of the best tyres for all types of vehicles

top speed has little or nothing to do with tyre care, so forget that, how they are treaded from cold is much more likely.

the Pirelli strada is much the same as the Metz Z6, single compound, a good tyre, a little outdated now, but a decent sport-touring tyre, the PR2 is a generation newer and dual compound so should give better wear.

incidentally I got the Avon storm 2 on the from of the Aprilia Pegaso (yeah I know a lighter single cylinder bike) changed today after 15k (the rear done nearly 12k).

I have Strada's on at the moment front and rear, done 1500 miles and they barely look worn. I ride all year round to rain or shine. I would def recommend them. I do ride sensibly but I do push them hard at times and they are good even in the wet.

I have gone for the Strada's - cheaper and supposedly better on mileage ?? We will see.

Doing a few big runs around scotland this year, and could do with more than 4k on a rear tyre.

I wish i knew why i was so hard on tyre's but guess it is just givin it the beans at every opportunity! Just enjoy the acceleration on the bike.

I also wonder if using engine braking a lot would affect tyre wear on the rear???

if you still have the standard suspenders then that will most certainly eat your tyres.

That bit dont matter as much as the day some dozy git pulls out on you or changes lanes and you need to stop quick.
Thats when £30+ on a tyre compared to your excces and the pain of falling off doesn't seam such a great saving???

Hard acceleration and engine braking does affect the wear on the rear but in all fairness Scottish road surfaces seem a bit rougher than the ones down south so taking these factors alone the wear rate is going to be higher.
Suspension set up and slight variations in tyre pressure can be other big contributing causes

Its not the saving of the £30 that bothers me the most - just trying to find a tyre that lasts more than 3.5k - 4k on the rear. I would happily pay more if I got better mileage. The PR3 rear was a bloody fortune and it lasted no time at all. On rear tyres - OEM Dunlops lasted 3.5k, 1st Storm 5k, next Storm 4K !!!!! and PR3 3.5k !!!!! (Is it sad I know these numbers???)

Its the only thing I don't like about motorbikes is the fact I have to put around 3 or 4 tyres on every year!

Your lucky you not back in the 80's with cross ply s.
GPZ 900r 1500 miles out of a rear and they didn't grip anymore than modern touring tyres . Probly less .
