Pointy rear brake pad questions.
 

hi ,

i tried to clean my caliper using brush and soap but could not take the pin that holds the brake pads together
i think it needs a flat screw driver but i was about to damage it so stopped, i used wd40 on the pin to loosen it up but still nothing

do you guys simply use a flat screw driver ?
what screw driver type do you recommand that the head doesn't get damaged as easy as the ones i have or at least are heavy duty not made from cheese


secondly my pads don't have a wear indicator but have around 2-3mm left, does this need changing , how much pad does a brand new one have?

i also pushed the piston out which did emptied the fluid resorvior and then pushed it back it by using a screw driver pushed against the piston and the other side agaist the caliper body, is that ok or will it damage the piston .

i am thinking of getting ebc brake pads which seems to be the best but also can see kyota and gold for much cheaper, has anyone used them

for a start it might make it easier if you told us whatt model bike you have, there are guidelines for technical help here.

the retaining pins are held in by an R clip, this needs removing before the pins can be withdrawn, should they be seize, then there are several things that can be tried.

New pads have 6-8mm of friction material on them, wear indicators aren't on all pads so you have to judge when they need changing, as to brand, experience will let you know which you prefer, all will work, the more expensive give better feel, onlt you can say which you prefer (much like tyre brand).

I've used both Kyoto and EBC pads on my 400 and I could definitely feel a difference. EBC seemed to be a lot better.. Don't know if that was the different pads or just new pads. The Mechanic I go to swears by the EBC Sintered pads, although I found them a bit sharp and grabby in the wet, so I stick with the normal EBC pads from wemoto :)

Thanks mate, sorry forgot to mention my bike is 05 pointy shape
I could not see any clips etc it is just a flat screw

Does 14 for rear ebc pads sound right

Doesn't sound too bad to me, paid £20 a pair from wemoto!
