SV forks - Oil and seal fitment - Encouragement and advice
 

Afternoon all,

Planning on doing my fork seals this weekend. :smt100

I've never done ths so could do with all the encouragement and advice I can get.

The biggest question I currently have is what fork oil I ought to put in and how much? (the fork internals ought to be standard unless the PO played with them)

Second question is how to ensure the forks and wheel etc are all aligned properly when I refit everything?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

Jason, do a search for my threads. I did this for the 1st time & i had loads of advice. Take note of what you do to take them off, it's the reverse of it & loosen off the preload adjusters at the top of the forks before you remove the forks (you really dont want them spinning round try to do it with them off). Can someone confirm if he needs broom handle the bottom bolts inside the fork lowers to do the job? - i can't remember!

Are you doing all the seals? - not just the dust seal?

hi did mine a for first time a bit back , turned out very easy , do search on here lots of advise , also found a great vid on you tube showing you how to do it as well , as oil goes depends on your weight , most use 15w oil to harden the rebound a bit but 10w is standard , i prefer 15w myself , good luck ,

I'm doing oil and dust seals.

Any suggestions on how much oil I should be putting in each leg? How big an air gap?

For K3-K6 SV650S the amount (and this will vary a little, say +/- 2%) is 488ml. For K3-on SV650S it's 94mm from the top (that's the important bit).

Clamp the fork slider in a soft-jawed vice (a workmate with cardboard on the jaws and a bit of cloth around the slider works well) and 'pump' the fork tube enthusiastically to distribute the oil. Then adjust the level to 94mm from the fully extended fork top.

Pop back the spring, spring seat washer and spacer. The tricky bit is next - screw in the top bolt/pre-load adjuster without cross-threading it. I suggest putting on a socket, add a rag for padding, position yourself over the fork, press down and rotate the socket by hand until the thread engages properly. 'Hand' tighten with the socket wrench then torque it up (23Nm I believe) on the bike.

When you refit the forks the top of standard tubes would normally be flush with top yoke surface for K3-on. The axle can be used to ensure the forks are orientated correctly before tightening everything up.

Aside from the above just make sure you don't mix left and right fork components up.
