Electrical problem. Curvy.
 

2000 SY model curvy.

Over the last few days on my bike the speedo has been intermittent.
Ok I thought no probs its the speedo drive. The bike is going to my usual mechanic for an MOT,he can look at it.
Today on my way to work speedo was sort of working and then I notice the rev counter needle bouncing around :confused:
I get to work and as I got through the gate the bike just died. No ign lights nothing.
I parked up and started work and went back to the bike later. I turnned the key and had ign lights and the bike started. Tried it again and dim ign lights.
So am thinking poss battery or connection. Anyways I charged the battery,which is only a few months old and it was fine. Put battery back on and dim ign lights and starter somtimes clicks somtimes nothing. In the end got towed home by AA.

Any ideas/suggestions?

There's a few things I'd try.

First get a multimeter on the battery and make sure it's holding a good charge.

Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight.

There's a couple of points where the loom likes to rub through - at the headstock and particularly under the riders seat where the loom passes by the bolts that secure the seat. Check there for any damage to the loom.

The main fuse is in the green box behind the RHS cover under the riders seat. Check the connections in that box are clean and secure.

Check the main earth is also clean/secure. It's at the back of the engine - you can see it from the RHS of bike looking behind the clutch cover.

Will start looking at those points you mention.

The AA bloke tried the test on my battery but the battery is good.(its only a few months old anyway)
When the AA bloke got some jump leads and connected up from his van to my bike the bike will start on the button and run fine. As soon as he took one lead off it cut out straight away.

I started to look at my bike but in the end got the mechanic to look at it.
He was going to have the bike this week for an MOT anyway.

He called me yesterday and said he had checked it over and it was the battery :confused: I was out at the time and couldn't really talk so will find out more today.

Ok so mechanic has bike.
I get a call saying "all fixed" Ok that was quick I think.
He says he has done some checks and tests and its the battery. :-|
The battery....... :confused:
He says first thing he did was to put a new battery on it fired straight up. Says he did checks/tests and it all points to the battery.
Well there must really be something really going wrong inside that battery. Never had that kind of trouble from a battery before.
Thing is itwas bought in January.

Under guarrantee then?Take battery back and get your money back

Been told the battery only had a 6 month warranty.

It might have a 6 months warranty but should still be covered under the sale of goods act "fit for purpose" which isn't limited by time so yes take it back.

Got bike back today. Have a new battery fitted,cant wait to try and claim for the old battery.
I hope that a duff battery was the only problem.
