Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
Chaps! I'm posting in here as you're the local SV guys and while I'm also on a few other forums with bikers in Essex they are not guys who are overly familiar with the SV. Their response was "Find someone with an SV650 and ask them". So I am!
I got my hands on my first SV just over a month ago to work on while I get my modules done; it needs some stuff doing like indicators, leaking calipers, leaking fork seals and apparently an engine knock. Having not worked on bike engines before I'm not exactly familiar with what cam chain tensioners sound like and so have no idea what is a CCT rattle and a big-end knock. AlexW gave it a listen when he dropped off some parts for me and I think that he was a bit non-plussed too so I'm kinda after and second and maybe third opinion. Is there anyone local to the Wickford/Southend area who could possibly swing by one weekend or evening to have a listen? I'm happy to pay in beer or similar, I'm also a professional PC & network tech so can repay a helping out for a helping out if anyone needs it. I'd just like to absolutely make sure that I need a new engine before I go shelling out £400-500 and having to put in the time to swap them over. Thanks! :) |
Re: Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
You don't have to be familer with the sv to decifer a knock from a rattle .
if its bottom end it will be influences by load |
Re: Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
So it should get more pronounced when the bike's ridden? Most of the engine noises increase with the revs but the knock should sound different under load?

Re: Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
id not ride it. just put it in 2nd then load the engine up as if your about to pull away .
if the knock sounds heavy its bottom end another give away is look at the oil. drain it and see if it has metal sparkley bits in it. cam chain noise is also higher up .Sort of catering quality . a screw driver makes a good listening stick. SV s dont like low oil levels and wheelies . |
Re: Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
Good call there mate, thanks! Sitting on the bike in 2nd gear, keeping the brakes on and bringing out the clutch makes the engine give a clearly audible tapping sound.
That would be the big-ends causing grief then? :( |
Re: Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
only if changing the load makes it louder.
Ok is a pig to get to the chain tensinoer ,But worth giving it a look at.You can make the spechal tool too http://www.sv650.org/camten/cam%20ch...tenstioner.htm |
Re: Help Request - Odd Engine Noise?
Aye, I was looking at the CCT and was hoping that it's making the noise! I am suspecting a knock though from what you've said as loading the engine brings the noise to the fore. I'm assuming that a noisy tensioner would speed up with the engine also?
