What just happened to my bike? Exhaust when BANG
 
I went out for a ride today. I discovered some amazing roads and the weather was gorgeous with hardly any cars on the road so I was making progress. There was a junction up ahead so I started to gradually slow down with gentle engine braking. As I was slowing I pulled the throttle back slightly to keep some speed, but there was no power. The bike was revving but no power. I looked at the dash and the N light wasn't on, I was in either 1st or 2nd. A few seconds later my exhaust backfired, it went POP very loudly, I've never heard it backfire like this before. I turned the engine off because I thought something has snapped/exploded. I left it off for about 20 seconds and started it up again and it ran as though nothing had happened. I rode about 30 miles back home and the bike was back to it's normal self.

Very strange, nothing like this has happened before. Just wondering what you guys think happened?

Sounds like it might've been a temporarily blocked jet or a plug not sparking? No spark= reduced power from one cylinder not firing, the uncombusted mix builds in the cylinder, plug manages to spark, ignites the whole lot, way bigger sound from the can due to a larger volume of fuel combusting, sparkplug carries on doing it's job, everything is back to normal.

Could check the plugs, leads & coils?

You're probably onto something there. I definitely didn't knock the kill switch because I would have then had to accidentally knock it back again without knowing. Very unlikely.

If it reved up and you didn't accelerate, you must've hit a false neutral (won't show neutral light). While I can't explain the backfire precisely, if you are on the throttle with different amounts of engine load (in gear, then false neutral, then in gear) there could be an excess of fuel at some point which would cause the backfire.

Doubt there is anything wrong, but as always, hard to guess from a quick summary.
