Newbie Bit of advice wanted. Please

Firstly just to say Hi. New on this site so hope I am doing this right.

A couple of us are looking at getting an old Carb Sv650 and plan to go racing next year when we have got everything sorted.

The rules look pretty straight forward, We have both been riding on the road & tinkering with bikes for years. As well as watching road racing at the TT and up at Oliver's Mount quite a bit & a fair bit of track racing. Now seems a good time to get involved in the Mini Twins.

the main questions I have are what is the benefit of changing the rear sub frame against leaving the standard on?

The front sub frame I assume will need to be changed to fit a full race fairing?

Where can I get this sub frame, I have not seen these anywhere, Or can you just fix the fairings onto existing bolts/frame mounts etc? this is the only bit that seems a bit vauge.

Any other advice you could give would be very much appreciated.

Cheers in advance Oli.:D

Hi Oli!

In a word: Weight. Pick the front and rear sub-frames up. You'll understand why people consider them candidates for replacing with lighter items.

Different people have different bodywork. Some is bespoke SV650 stuff, some is modified Triumph 675 or Suzuki GSXR etc. What's going to fit will depend on the bodywork.

My personal opinion (and I've done zero races, but helped prep some track bikes) is that the fairing helps the bike look nice but doesn't make a huge difference otherwise. I'd prioritise loosing weight, getting decent tyres, and making the suspension work for you.

For the record the track bikes I've been involved in building had a fibreglass rear seat unit, and no front plastics at all. When I dropped it we took 10 minuted to change the gear lever over and back out we went.

Cheers Jambo. still think im confused as what is classed as the front sub frame. Is it just clock holder etc? or am I being raly stupid?

Changing rear sub frame should be easy enough this just means moving the battery is this correct?
All the other advice seems common sence realy just spend time faffing about unill you get it right for what we want eh?
cheers. Oli.

Decide what you want to achieve. The minitwin rules pretty much allow you to take a working road bike, add an oil catch tray, stop the brake light coming on and get on the grid.

The front sub frame is the bit of black painted steel that attaches to the front headstock with 2 bolts and the instruments, lights, front plastics, windscreen, mirrors and front wiring loom attach to it. Not hard to remove. You can replace this with a light alloy item, but if you're not fitting bodywork designed for that in the first place you may want to fabricate something or use the original bit at first.

A race rear sub frame can still hold the battery if that's intended, but is generally smaller. The main reason is that you don't need the strength or size to carry 2 passengers and their luggage, just enough to hold you and some fibreglass. We modified the original using a cutting disc, and welding a little extra material to make a new battery box.

It's very easy to spend a lot of money on the things that make it look like a track bike, rather than the things that make it cheap to crash and easy to work on :)

Yeh we are trying to go as cheep as possible. We are all used to working on bigger bikes so it shouldn't be too hard. Will see whats what when we get the SV in bits.

Thanks for your help.

hi m8, my name is rob miles, www.rvracing.co.uk i race with bemsee on carby 650, i make my own subframes front and rear, and have made frames for other riders, also i make captive spacer kits and a few other bits and bobs, including reaset kits, my kit is basic no frills stuff that will not break your balls or your bank balance when you slide down the road ( and you will slide down the road) im not an engineer but an enthusiastic amature , until recently i have made stuff for the carby, as dont have a pointy bike to use as a design mule, i now have the loan of a pointy so that will all change, my front subframe it has to said have been restricted to ducati fairings, as this is the fairing i run, nice and and cheap and lots of them. i run an 08 blade seat, lots of them to, forgive my unashamed plug, but i believe cost effective racing should remain just that, yours in sport rob 07922 014 533 ;)

I can recommend Rob's work totally. The last subframe I had off him for a carby was excellent and the fireblade seat unit fitted fine and looked great.
