Any painters and decorators? Need advice
 

If anyone is a professional painter and decorator can you please let me know.
I'm moving house soon and need some advice as been in to lol at new house today and OMG!

Not in the trade as such but work with them often enough and I know a fair bit on the subject regarding prep etc.

I have been to look around the house I am due to move into in a few weeks and it has some hideous paintwork and colours! The Walls are very uneven and I am considering getting a plasterer in to skim the Walls.

To reduce costs etc will I have to scrape all the paint off first? Or would it get plastered over? What's the beat way to remove layers of paint?

In the bathroom it looks like wallpaper has had some sort of artex coating. Is this a nightmare to remove and what's the best way to remove?

Leave the paint on the walls if plastering, they will seal the walls with a pva coat so it's not necessary.

Wallpaper will steam off but be careful not to leave it on too long or plaster could weaken and come away with paper, get a bit going then slowly move the steamer plate upwards with the scraper following on behind, get this right and you should peel the paper away in strips.

I don't really want to go through the expense of plastering. Not sure whether to try and scrape off the paint or paint over but it'll take a few coats to cover the horrendous colours.

If the colours are really dark then maybe best to lining paper over it & paint onto that.

I normally use basecoat to cover dark/offensive colours. One that sticks in my mind is a room that was completely painted in a bright green and I mean completely- walls, ceiling, doors everything!
I gave the walls and ceiling 1 coat of base coat and then 2 coats of decent emulsion and it was completely covered.

Agree with the basecoating. Every room in my house has been replastered and if you want the best finish a skim, basecoat and decent topcoat are the way forward but very expensive (£200 for someone to skim a bedroom and then £100 in paint soon adds up). Depends if you want any rewiring done too. If you are just painting rooms then basecoat (IIRC its £26 for a 5l tub in B+Q and you'll need 2) and a top coat of whatever you want.
