Damaged front tyre.

Doing 70mph down the A127 this morning (and feeling quite pleased that I got my 125 up to 70mph!) and I start to hear an odd muffled fast tapping noise. I know my bike, and this is a new sound. I get close to work and slow down in the Brentwood traffic and as I do I feel a rythmic bumping through the front forks. Definately a new thing.

I get to work OK, kill the engine and walk my bike forward watching the front tyre and...
(Now I hope these are the right pics, I uploaded them via my phone and can't view Photobucket at work so I'm trusting that they're not of Lucy Pinder or my SV work or anything lol)

What the actual feck are these two bumps on my tyre tread and am I correct in feeling that I should get my bike home some other way??

WHAT THE HELL Is Up With My Front Tyre...?

Woah, not seen this before accept for on car tyre side walls after a kerb strike. You hit any big potholes lately?

I can only think that the structure underneath is compromised in some way ie cords broken/snapped? I'd get it changed pronto whatever though.

i think you should let the tyre down and get a way home without riding, if they go bang it could cause a crash or sound like someone is shooting at you

Looks like they have over heated and the tread is coming away from the carcus. Don't ride.

I'd hazard a guess that the rubber has come away from the carcass at those points.

That would be terminal for the tyre, and it could last a little while or pop as soon as you roll it forwards. Not cool.

I'd be inclined to phone around and find a local tyre fitter with a correct tyre in stock and ride it slowly. If you're going to have to do any pace at all I'd probably see if I could get the wheel to them another way. Bear in mind there's no sure way of telling whether if that rubber comes away your tyre would loose pressure suddenly or not without inspecting it off the rim.

Thanks chaps! It does look like a fling-off waiting to happen. I don't recall hitting any potholes or anything recently so the cause is a bit of a mystery.

Fortunately I think the bike will be safe at work in the underground car park so all I have to worry about is getting home today. #-o

OOOH.Delaminated tread. What make of tyre is on it?Either way its fooked and must be dealt with before riding anywhere. If its a carp make of tyre think about getting a new rear as well.

Re: Damaged front tyre.

Yeah id be curious what the make is? Maybe the tyre isnt rated for doing that speed, although 70 is fairly standard for a sporty 125..

Re: Damaged front tyre.

I had the same, but smaller, on the front Roadsmart a few months ago. I noticed an odd sensation through the steering, then it went very vague. I slowed right down (from an enthusiastic cruise :)) and pulled into a layby. The tyre was flat and when I rolled it round I saw a 4cm diameter blister that had burst. I thanked my lucky stars, then called for recovery. I contacted my tyre place and they had it in to send off for inspection. Dunlop mush have found a manufacturing fault as they gave me 70% of a new one. I now check tyre condition more often but am happy to report no further issues.
