Does honey go 'out of date' or 'off'?

Straight question really? I have a tub of honey that went 'out of date' in 2011, but looks perfect still.
Mum reckons it's still fine because honey doesn't go 'off'?

no.

It'll be fine, that's probably a "best before" date

Trust your eye and nose, but generally speaking no. They just have to put best before dates on things.

I will happily just spoon out mould from even things like pesto and use the rest....for myself of course ;)

Honey will be fine. Sugar is a great preservative :D

Honey is the only food in the world that does not spoil, fact.

Re: Does honey go 'out of date' or 'off'?

Honey doesn't generally go off because it's such a concentrated sugar solution, any microbes/fungi spores that land on the surface of it will lose their liquid content to the honey by osmosis and thereby die.... (or at least be made VERY dormant)

Honey can also absorb a little moisture from the atmosphere. If it absorbs too much, the osmosis trick no longer works and it can go off...

So keep the lid on when you're not using it and it'll be fine.
