RHS rear indicator not working

Front right flashes fast, rear doesn't flash at all. Assumed it was the bulb, however have checked that and it's fine.

Continuity from bulb holder to connector under pillion seat, so that rules out that short length of cable. No voltage getting to the connector though (LHS connector shows voltage).

So I'm assuming there's a wiring fault somewhere, as I'm assuming the flasher unit services all the indies and if it works, it works for all of them? (I know to assume makes an ass out of u and me )

Any particular places to start or is it a case of taking time and continuity testing everything back from the connector to the fuesbox/flasher relay etc?

Thanks in advance.

Doh! God-dammit! I vowed you'd never get ME with that one!

Anyhoo, it'd be the SV650S K 8 that I've had ever since I logged onto this forum 5 years ago ;)

Anyone?

Re: RHS rear indicator not working

The output to the front & rear indicators are linked (though I can't remember if they're seperate pins coming out of the flasher), and with the standard setup the effect of having one set fail open (either blown bulb or poor connection) is that the remaining indicator flashes twice as fast.

I'd break out the wiring diagram, then concentrate on the parts that are only used for the rear, right indicator as the wiring for the front is probably fine. Check continuity from bulb holder (-ve) to common ground (frame) to rule out earth, then from bulb holder (+ve) to output from flasher unit to check live connectivity. Chances are one of those 2 won't work and you can break the search down along that wire.

Before you do this check the bulb holder is doing Ok, sometimes they get a bit bent or furry and just aren't creating a good contact with the bulb. Swap the connector for left & right rear indicators if possible to rule that out, but do remember to swap them back ;)

Cheers Jambo. As I said, I've checked continuity from bulb holder to the connector. So assume the fault must lie between the flasher unit and the connector.

Re: RHS rear indicator not working

The circuit goes supply-flasher unit-switch-splits in two-indicators, if the other side works and the other indicator on the problem side works, then the fault lies at/beyond the junction where the cable from the switch splits to go to either indicator.
Does your bike have identical, (but for the colour, obviously), plugs/sockets for both rear indicators? If yes try swapping them over, does the fault stay on the same side? If yes then the problem indicator/connector/wiring itself is suspect, if no then the ensure continuity between the negative wire in the loom side of the problem side rear indicator connector and a frame earth or preferably the battery negative terminal.
If that's definitely OK, then check if all four indicators light when the hazards are switched on, if yes then the problem is in the loom between the junction of the indicator switch/front/rear wire and the hazard switch connection into the right side wiring. If no then the fault lies after that junction in the loom.

In the case of an SK8 the wire is light green. If the wiring inside the loom is definitely identified as the problem, it is usually easier to run another wire from somewhere convenient in the functioning part of the system to the problem indicator, rather than cutting the loom open and finding the broken wire/connection.

Of course! How silly of me not to consult my regularly updated list of everyone's various bikes that I keep especially for these occasions .

Cheers mate. I'll let you off for not checking the list on this occasion ;)

(Every time I see you post the 'what bike? ' question, I always think, 'Yeah. . Why wouldn't you post what bike it's for?' - so am mortally embarrassed to have neglected to state myself)

Had the same symptons on my CBR the evening before the MOT!

Found a loose wire under the seat for the return leg.

Probably no help at all but there you go!
