Tips for changing sump washer ...

So the Shed has a tiny little leak from the sump. That'll teach me for reusing the sealing washer. I'm not going to tighten it any more, I'll just change the washer when the job lot I've ordered have arrived.

SO!!! Let's have your clever suggestions for changing the washer with minimum oil use. I'm currently thinking get the new washer ready, undo sump bolt, quickly stick my thumb over the hole and get oil all over my hand and arm, wrestle with oil washer and new washer with one hand, stick new bolt in.

I've drained oil out of the sump before when I've overfilled, and quickly put the bolt back in. Not difficult, but this will require more gymnastics! Taking all serious and non serious suggestions!

just drain the oil into a clean container then refill with oil once the new washer is on. old plastic oil containers are your bestest friend.

Turn the bike upside down so the oil is at the top of the engine. Remove sump plug, replace washer. Put sump plug back in, tighten and the put bike rubber side down. Easy!

Remove sump plug a little, wrap some ptfe tape around the thread at the washer end, and screw back in. The. Change the washer at next oil change.

Pop a wheelie, get Tomor riding pillion with Job and he can play with your nuts while you've got it up. Don't see any scope for problems or double entendre there at all.

Buy a new plug too. Get it ready first and be quick.

Just nip it up a tad tighter then change it next oil change.

... you forgot something... put the right size of spanner onto the plug tightly. Then get a friend to lift you up by the ankles and turn you anti clockwise to loosen it.

Drop the coolant out of the bike and store for later.
Loosen sump nut.
Depending on your brand of oil the pour point is probably around -40C, simply cool the sump down to -40C or lower, then take the sump nut out, the oil will be around the consistency of peanut butter so will sit in the sump. Replace the washer being careful not to lick the bolt or touch it with bare skin.
Replace bolt.
Allow bike sump to warm up until the moisture from the air isn't freezing to the metal & fairings.
Replace coolant.

Easy peasy ;)
