Used tyre opinions?
Hi All,
I'm in desperate need of two new tyres however I'm a bit strapped for cash - I'm looking at replacing my standard D220's with these - I commute into London each day. Anyone able to offer an input? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1610176041...84.m1438.l2649 Thanks Dan |
Re: Used Tyres
I have a set of these take offs on my gsxr. Not ridden it myself yet, but from what i hear they are a very good tyre. Not suitable for all weather commuting though, pretty much a dry day only tyre i think, not enough tread to shift water.

Re: Used tyre opinions?
They wont last you 5 minutes if you have a big commute and as StuR said, they are not ideal in the wet. I dont know what your journey is like into London but if it involves motorways, the Supercorsas will square off pretty quickly. They are more suited to fast road riding and trackdays really.

Re: Used tyre opinions?
If your commuting, don't!
You'll get a 1000 miles if your lucky, decent sports touring tyres can be had for about £150 and will last a good while longer. sent from place where even the devil is afraid |
Re: Used tyre opinions?
A pair of part worn, super quick wearing tyres seems like an odd choice for cash strapped commuter. They're not good a choice for commuting, the centres will be knocked out in no time, and they'll not be happy in either cold or wet weather. For fitting add approx £20 if you take the wheels off, or at least twice that if you take the bike and tyres in and get someone else to do the whole job.

Re: Used tyre opinions?
I use Pirelli 'scrubs' all the time on my race bike, sc1's and 2's . Never even tried a new one, can't afford! They need to be hot to grip, especially sc1. Waste of money for commuting unless you have a racer mate who gives them free and you fit your own tyres in my opinion.

Re: Used tyre opinions?
Thanks for the tips guys, appreciated. Still new to biking so will take it very seriously!
I've got the D220's on at the moment which everyone thinks are useless but the rear now resembles a car tyre, but they've lasted 8k miles.. |
Re: Used tyre opinions?
You're right about the D220s. They arent called ditchfinders for nothing. Get shot of them as soon as you can get some better tyres.
I dont know what your budget is but you should really be looking at sports touring or touring tyres. I bet you can get some 2nd hand Metzeler Z6s for cheap money. Lots of people on here, myself included, all rate them. There are also the newer Z8s as well but they will be costing more for sure. Also look out for something like the Michelin Pilot Road 2 2nd hand, or if you can stretch to them, the Road 3. All good tyres that will be way better than the plastic hoops you have on now and should give you decent mileage and grip in wet/cold. You may go for something else but its possibly worthwhile having a look at something like these as a starting point. Talk to your local bike tyre dealer and see what they recommend. Ask a few places if you can and on here too to gauge opinions. Remember though, tyres can be a bit subjective. Different people like different ones sometimes because of the feel they give. |
Re: Used tyre opinions?
try your local bike tyre fitter, you never know they might have a special deal on or advise which would be best for your circumstances.

Re: Used tyre opinions?
You'll want a sports touring tyre from any of the brand names, including Maxxis. Scan ebay or your local tyre dealers M&P etc for specials. Worth google the name of the tyre to find reviews on them too.
As mentioned part worn race/track tyres will not be suitable as these tend to deteriorate quickly the more heat cycles they go through and you'd put them through a minimum of 2 a day on your commute! |
