Replacing an ignition switch
 
Looking at the old z750 project the other day I noticed just how ugly the ignition switch is. I'd like to move it out of sight and maybe replace it with a single hidden switch. Obviously this would need to be able to switch a couple (or three) separate circuits at once.

Has anyone else done something similar? How do race or track bikes deal with the ignition switch?

I'm still looking for a decent book on motorcycle elctrics if anyone has a recommendation.

There's a Haynes book on motorcycle electrics, it's about about principles rather projects, but it's a good book all the same.
Racers usually have a single switch - often the kill switch - rewired to cut everything, so only one pole required.
Is the original so bad? Once you've got some decent clocks on there it'll mostly be hidden, won't it? Also the original switch has your steering lock - would you be happy to lose that?

The steering lock is gone anyway as the Zephyr front end puts the tang in a different place. Security will have to come down to a disc lock or a big old chain.

And yes, the original is that bad. The way the headlight and clocks are going to be mounted will leave the thing exposed and it looks a mess. I'll probably end up putting an ignition swith under the front of the tank in the end. The other option is to have the lights wired permanently on and just use the normal light switch to switch them... I'll probably have to try a number of different ideas before it looks right. I could just hide a rocker switch out of the way somewhere and be done with it.

OK, understood. If you don't need the steering lock, how about fitting the switch in a side panel/under the rear of the tank custom stylee? May cut down on wiring too.

Another good idea to throw in the mix! Looks like a trawl through a few dodgy custom sites might be in order.

By all means borrow an ignition switch fitting position from a custom bike, but wear a bandana and we'll never speak to you again :) .
