Road Tax or Car Tax?
Interesting article on the BBC website today which really confirms what we all know. None of the money we pay in Vehicle Excise Duty has to go on improving the quality of the roads, which explains why they are all in such a pot holed state.

Re: Road Tax or Car Tax?
AFAIK car tax as such was abolished in the 30's, VED is part of general taxation as are most taxes, no particular tax is ringfenced for any particular budget or department.

Vehicle Excise Duty. It never did and it never was "road tax". Guess what your national insurance money isn't ringfenced for the NHS or pensions either. |
Road Tax or Car Tax?
The tax you pay to use the road stopped going to repair the roads back in 1978 or something

Re: Road Tax or Car Tax?
Dartford crossing should have been free after the initial cost was recouped but it was sold to a French company when nearly paid for then sold on again.

Re: Road Tax or Car Tax?
It was a retarded non-article that made a real botch of what is actually a pretty serious issue. I have had the "You don't pay road tax, you shouldn't be on the roads" shouted at me by a knuckle-dragger on more then one occasion. It doesn't very clearly make the case for it being called car tax in official usage. It also doesn't highlight very well the reasons for doing this. But hey the BBC has got its quota of supporting a particular group now.
