Non starter but misfires - Curvy.

It's a sv650s 99 reg and I was coming up to a junction and slowing down when it started backfiring like crazy and then cut out and the oil light came on. I tried putting more oil in so it was in the max but didn't work. Any suggestions would be helpful? I have been tempted to look at the sparks and wiring. Thanks

Has it got fuel in it? Simple things first, doens't sound like an oil problem, oil light will come on when motor isn't running.

Doesn't want to start and back fires when does

Or wrong fuel maybe

I've done 124 miles since my last fill up so it 100% unleaded. I might try filling up but would it backfire if there was no fuel?

Because it would start running lean as the fuel ran out, and that can cause backfires.

Just look in the tank and shake the bike.Must be the easiest "fault" to eliminate.Either there is fuel or there isnt.

Hi guys, so I've replaced the sparks, the one by the rad just looked old but the one under the tank had black tar stuff all around the thread and the bit where it sparks. I changed both for new ones and it started beautifully at first, then it started to misfire. I took out the spark under the tank and it had a little more of this tar stuff but not as much as the original spark.what would cause this chamber to do this? Once again thanks.

Could be a sticking float in the carb. Give it a tap with a plastic or wooden (I know-I'm old) screwdriver handle to see if it makes a difference. If the float sticks, the carb over-fuels and the plug gets wet/fails to ignite.

Cool I'm going to test it doesn't have a broken ring first as I can borrow a pressure tester from my work. If not I'll try that, thanks :)
