Engine squeeks, doesn't run. Curvy.
hey all, first post, so sorry if its in the wrong place xD
Right, yesterday i was on my 2001 sv650, was on it for about an hour, and then picked up my girlfriend, we came to my house to drop some things off, and must've stopped for about 5 minutes, when we left, i went to start up the bike, and i heard a quiet, low popping sound and some white smoke came from the engine, then the bike wouldn't start. The bike cranks, but there is now a squeaking sound, first thing i checked was fueling and the spark plugs, all are fine, and oil is also fine, and there is enough of it. Been told it could be piston rings, although, i haven't a clue, would like some help Had the bike for about 6 months now, and serviced it about 3 months ago, and its been absolutely perfect, this being the first problem. any help would be appreciated, thanks |

Re: Engine Squeek
When it made the low popping sound and made white smoke, could you tell where the sound came from? And/or the smoke?
What did you smell? Burning wires? Gas? Exhaust? Does the bike crank normally, other than the squeak? Is it really a squeak, high pitched like a mouse? |
Re: Engine Squeek
hi, thanks for the reply, i had my helmet on and balaclava under it when the it happened, so i couldn't smell it unfortunately, but the pop sounded like it came from the front cylinder and same with the smoke, at first i thought it came from the exhaust down pipes, and the squeak is hard to describe, my granddad calls it more of a tick, but my brother in law agrees with me that its a squeak, and id say its medium to high pitched. The bike turns over, but wont stay running for long, and it does now struggle even to get that far

Re: Engine squeeks, doesn't run. Curvy.
Oil level is ok from what you have said.
I'd say it's compression test time, and check both cylinders are within tolerance, and not massively out of whack with each other. It's also possible you could have fried the starter which would be less of a problem than a partial or full rebuild. |
Re: Engine squeeks, doesn't run. Curvy.
Is it possible that the pop was just a hose or breather pipe popping off of a connector and the smoke was just fumes from that open hose?
Could be worth propping up the tank and checking the vacuum hoses - it's free :) |
Re: Engine squeeks, doesn't run. Curvy.
hi mauler, popping up the tank was the first thing i checked, all hoses where connected properly, ill check that again though, never know, i could of missed something :S
and thanks atassiedevil, ill check the starter, and im just glad i have a compression tester in the shed :D |
Re: Engine squeeks, doesn't run. Curvy.
okay, so checked the compression at last, turns out the tester i had was the wrong size, took a while for the new bit to come, compression was 198 front cylinder 195 rear, but engine was cold. Also checked for a spark, and both plugs have a bright blue spark, and i meticulously went over all the pipes, and no kinks.
i tried to start it again this morning aswell, after id finished working on it, wishful thinking n all that xD anyway, the bike now starts if i hold the throttle slightly open, and the rev counter is reading roughly 700-800 revs, but sound like its doing a lot more I think its time to pull the carb's off anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks Al |

Compressions are fine, from your description the sparks seem good too, so, as you say, the next step is to check fuelling.
Before pulling the carbs off, check fuel flow into them and that airflow is OK too. From what you say I suspect the carbs will require a thorough cleaning, but it's always worthwhile checking the easy stuff first. |
Re: Engine squeeks, doesn't run. Curvy.
Thanks squid ill do just that :D probably pull the carbs off anyway, wont do em any harm to have a clean xD
