Reg/rec wiring
Afternoon org
I'm re-positioning the Reg/rec on the bike, and it needs the cables extended about 1 metre. What gauge cable would be best for doing it? The reg/ rec is a MOSFET FH012 and its on a curvy? Thanks in advance Andy |
Re: Reg/rec wiring
Have a look at
http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm Think the diodes (in the regulator) are 45 amp, so 5mm should be ample. |
Re: Reg/rec wiring
As you're having to chop into the loom to extend, measure the wire sizes when you do.
strip back the insulation, and measure the copper diameter. This should do you. Do it per wire though. If you know the current output, or have access to an AC/DC ammeter, you could see how much is drawn on the three phases, and the rectifier output on full load, this would tell you for sure. |
Re: Reg/rec wiring
From memory, the alternator rated max. output is 300W. At 12V that's 25A, so 3sq.mm cable should be more than ample. Technically, I suppose, the alternator output wires could be smaller being a 3phase system, and it wouldn't surprise me if what is fitted is actually smaller than that, but I reckon larger is better than smaller (simply to avoid unnecessary volt drop and heating losses) and these are hardly large conductors so not difficult to work with.
As others have said, matching the existing as near as you can is a good rule of thumb but remember that modern vehicle wiring tend to use thinwall cable that is higher rated so may be smaller cross sectional area. |
Re: Reg/rec wiring
From memory it's 3 mm thin wall on the alternator.
The fh012 r/r is 50a rating so I'm going to order something around the middle of the two figures Sent from my ST25i using Tapatalk 2 |
Re: Reg/rec wiring
Been doing a bit of checking on lunch about the Alternator rating. It is 300W on a curvy (upto 370 on the Pointies and DL's and 400W on the SV1K).
So I'm going to order up the parts |

Re: Reg/rec wiring
Probably for better airflow, they can get quite hot which causes failure, unless they're MOSFET types.

Re: Reg/rec wiring
The plan is to move it to near the front cylinder, the reason it's too big for the the original r/r position

What one are you using?
