new helmet time, recommendatins?
 

Hi all,

It's new helmet time, had my HJC rpha 10 for 3 yrs now and it's started to fall apart as it only weighs 1200g I want something in that ball park but want to try another brand under £200.

Previously had-
Shoei -was ok
AGV - feels cheap and noisey
shark race r pro - good helmet but too expensive.

Some of this will come down to fit, which is pretty subjective.

I would consider one of the budget Arai lids. I've been very happy with mine in terms of the padding lasting and it still retaining a very similar feel to when it was new. My previous AGV felt tatty after a while, the HJC got a new set of internal padding 1/2 way through its life, but the Arai is still going.

They do have a silly visor mechanism though, but I rarely change that.

Tin is the same as recommending a set of tyres. Everyone has a chosen name and price.

I've had Shoei, Arai, KBC and other cheap makes now have a Shark race Pro, of all of these I love both the Shark and Shoei. Both light and both expensive. You will get a Shoei and Shark for around the £200 mark shop around and see what you like, try loads on and go from there

Bell helmets seemed to be overlooked by many, I have a Bell M5X Daytona and I love it. It is slightly noisy especially when riding at speed next to nearside hedgerows, exhaust noise seems to bounce of the hedgerow but apart from that it a cracking helmet. Very comfy with good fit, looks good imo, its light-weight and give good peripheral vision. Gorgeous Bikes supplied at a decent discount and gave excellent customer service.

I've had my X-lite 701 for two years now and couldn't be happier with it, it fogs less than an Arai, and there is a good deal to be had on eBay if you trust posted helmets, otherwise might be a bit over your price range. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/32108...f14=101&ff19=0

I lI've bell helmets, unfortunately they dontnlove me, they just don't fit my head, arai too expensive, shoei if I can get one for £200 or less I will, xlite im just not sure, are they heavy or even safe?

well they have to pass certain tests as far as I'm aware to be allowed to be sold in this country/the eu. I know you say some are too expensive, but I think that as you can't get a replacement head, whereas you can get false other limbs. so I always try n go for the best helmet I can afford that's comfortable! I really would say to try an arai on and if you can't afford it but like it, then save up for it!

X-lite are for sale in the UK and mine is pretty comfy for my head, they're a derivative of Nolan helmets and pretty much the same weight as a Shoe bar a couple of grams. Dependant on what you think of the governments SHARP scheme the X-lite 701 gets 4 stars, which is pretty decent considering the cheaper Arai helmets get 2 stars and even their RX7 GP only gets four stars, but you have to have faith in their rating. As much as brand gives a good reputation it doesn't mean others aren't as good, besides Lorenzo wears/used to wear them, and he still seems to be doing alright! That being said, if I didn't think the X-lite was any good I would stop wearing it and go buy a new helmet pronto, but personally I trust it.

Always swear by Arai, probably the most comfortable helmet's i have ever owned BUT for convenience I usually just use a HJC flip these days, tend to gravitate back to the Arai if I'm going on a run but again the HJC has that integrated sun visor which is a godsend this time of year....
