Curvy tank drain tube rusted.
 

Well after removing the tank, taking off the fuel tap to find a depressing amount of water and rust in the petrol I checked the drain tube by sticking my finger over one end and blowing in the other. It'll come as no surprise to a lot of you that there was no resistance to my puff just the sound of air blowing in the tank.
Subsequently I've read all the posts and just about everything I can find on the interweb and it looks like a replacement tank. Oh deep joy!!!
Still reckon it's worth the repair.
So I'll be scouring fleabay and gumtree for a yellow tank for a 2000 SY.

Good luck, they are as hard to find as rocking horse poo. I have a yellow one in my garage with the same problem from a few years back, it took me a year to find a new one in yellow, had a nice red one on for a while.

Yeah, don't think I'll find the right one in a hurry, just have to put up with the wrong colour and keep searching.
Let the hunt begin!

I'm sure there was something on here about getting it fixed by a company that can repair this tube.

Could just use electrolysis and de rust it that way. Means you don't etch away at the tank either.
there are other chemical methods for removal of rust. Most tanks can be saved (and i have to do this to the spare VF tank soon myself, as it's rustier than a monk's undercarriage)

No this is not the problem, there is a drain tube that runs from the filler hole, inside and through the tank.

Its this tube that's rusted through, which allows any water that's running around the filler neck to get into the main fuel tank.

Ah, i hear you.
I've seen repairs done on similar tanks with a length of fuel hose pushed through that tube, bonded or sealed at either end
Brass tubing done the same way can also work.

I'm not sure if it's feasable with the SV tank though, as i've not seen the construction from the inside, or how this is routed through the tank.

Your safest bet is, as you've said a new tank.

There are a few on ebay currently....None yellow though.

Not sure if a company like this could repair the tube by opening up the tank from the underside and soldering a new tube in place.

I'm sure I've read in a magazine that there is a company in the UK that does this, but I don't know if its this one

Have a check of where it had rusted through. If it is right at the top of the tube at the first bend I have managed to reseal one using araldite applied via a finger through the filler neck after clearing the rust away. No idea how long that would last and it was only possible in this case as the size of the hole was very small. Failing that I may have a light blue tank and a yellow baglux cover. This is a yellow from 99 bike I know they did 2 shades I'd need to check if it was correct.
