Waterproof socks

I have read here on a few threads people saying about waterproof socks.
So am wondering,
Are they really anygood?
Do you wear just them or a normal pair underneath aswell?
What length do you wear? the full length to the knee or mid calf?

Thanks

Re: Waterproof socks

When out mountain biking my ankle socks become fantastic foot buckets. The water runs down my leg and into the sock. They then seem to work like a wetsuit. They stay warm but I'm always a little concerned about getting trench foot.

I use waterproof socks regularly. Usually Asda own as that's what is easy to hand at home. Tesco ones work well as do those upmarket Waitrose ones. The trick is to use ones that didn't rip when you put the shopping in them.

I don't know quite what I'm going to do when we start having to pay for carrier bags. Seems silly to pay 5p for each sock.

Re: Waterproof socks

A few years ago I found myself in Wales with several days of rain forecast and my waterproof boots had decided they weren't. Bought a set of sealskinz socks to put over my normal socks and had completely dry warm feet from there on. Also use them if I'm going to be standing around somewhere cold and wet as they create a great thermal barrier.

what you are thinking about is seal skinz socks, they aren't cheap, they are water proof, breathable, and are made of merino wool, and are available in different lengths and thickness for summer and winter use,oh and they do work

Seen some bikers even double up by using them to keep their boots dry. only on motorways though.

Yep they do work & are worth the dosh.

On AR12 in the deluge my feet were perfectly warm & dry, even though I knew my boots leaked.

Buy the longer ones

You can get old stock military Gortex boot liners which do the same thing, but you'll need to wear a pair of socks underneath them.

Seal skinz are expensive but good, they also keep alot of the wind out if you have summer boots due to the membrane. On the coldest winter days with summer boots its not too cold at all, without the seals its hell!

+1 for the seal skinz, brilliant socks and you don't need to wear normal socks underneath but I did just for extra warmth
