replacing ignition barrel
Some little [expletives deleted........................................... .........Sorry there were quite a few.............................] tried stealing the Tiger last night. Luckily they didn't succeed. However they have kindly removed the ignition barrel for me. My Youtube and Google-Fu is failing me a bit here, Anyone got any links/pointers on replacing an ignition barrel. The entire key cylinder is missing, but the rest looks on simple inspection to be unharmed.
What else would I need to check they haven't broken, such at the steering lock mechanism? |

Sorry to hear that, little sods, glad they didn`t get it away though.
Could you not get a new complete unit and unbolt the old and bolt the new on? If the steering lock is bust as well then it may be worth it. |

If the bars turn freely is the steering lock definitely busted? If how/what do I check, if they might have not broken this? I cannot find anything on google about the Tiger 800 specifically.

I'm very sorry some filthy scum tried to steal your motorcycle, I hope their nuts rot, fall off and roll down a drain.
I can't be certain about your Tigger, but the other Triumph I attended to recently has a, nowadays, conventional barrel and lock in one combination, neither of which is available separately. It's bolted to the underside of the top yoke in a similarly conventional manner with a couple of security headed bolts. |

So i'll need to drill out the bolts (I think I read that elsewhere too) and bolt on a new barrel/lock combination to it? So that is also the surround (i.e. the bit with the key turn marking) and the bit with 12v socket? Just bolt on and wire up the new unit?
I guess I also need to get a new tank lock (for the keys to match), but thats a much easier switch. |

Usually the bolts will be Security Torx (I have not checked a triumph barrel attachment, so I could be way wrong here). Have a look with a light and / or mirror and then see about getting a set of these from machine mart, Halfords or similar. You can drill the centre pin out and use standard Torx bits, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
Picture below from google should show standard vs security torx. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...iwaw_rB02UQnNm You can usually order a new ignition barrel to match the key you have provided you have the frame number, and documentation proving you own the bike, chat to Triumph on this one. I'm just going to ask here. Given the frame has been cut, and the ignition damaged, there's a high chance an insurance company would write this off. If you were going to make a claim I'd think about this now. Otherwise as in this thread and the other, the damage can be repaired. Jambo |

sounds like this wasn't your typical opportunist thief, but a steal to order the effort they have gone through.
I'd see if you could lock it & your SV away in a garage for the time being. Next time it maybe a van and a few burly men. |
