Gear for euro bike trip
Hi there,
Just a quickie as I'm mulling over what to wear on a euro bike trip to Italy at the beginning of May. I already have: -a two piece RST leather suit -Textile jacket and bottoms -Alpinestar jacket but from what people have advised they reckon the best thing to wear is the leather bottoms and some form of motocross armour under a windproof shirt (and to have a waterproof handy for when it tips down) I was looking at this under armour shirt from force field http://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/ff300...protector.html and was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts on this or any other recommendations |

How about this? Dunno what size you are but if you can get it in your size why not? I've been using mine with the lining in and its been ok. Recently took the lining out and its too cold. Yes I know it's branded but for £50 its a great buy. They also do it in a flat grey colour. |
Re: Gear for euro bike trip
For summer touring in Europe I take a couple of sets of base layers (I use cycling ones), a micro fleece, a summer mesh suit and a cheap boil in the bag one piece rain oversuit, this covers all eventualities as long as the temperature stays above 6-7 degrees.

Take a spare set of gloves. Ideally a waterproof/warm glove for the mountains or if its chucking it down and normal vented "race" gloves. I also take a pair of A* road/mx gloves for when its stiffling hot and I'm just bopping about town/coast.
Leather trousers are the most comfy for your azz if you are doing alot of m/way miles. You will stew in them if you are headed anywhere hot. Mine spent mosty of the time strapped to the back of the bike, so I'm now go with full textiles with plenty of vents. Try and take the linings with you or make the space to stash them. If you are headed for the Alps in May it will be really cold up top even on the lower passes (the only ones that will be open at that time of year cos of the amount of snow!) As said tshirts with good wicking properties are brilliant, Berghaus etc. both in the hot and cold. Wear for a few days without them getting skanky, easily washed and quick to dry. |

So many clothes! I did a month around europe and took:
Up top: Thermal longsleeve couple of t-shirts berghaus thin fleece Leather jacket berghaus thin water/windproof jacket for those horrible days Down below Thermal long-johns Draggin jeans (with leg armour underneath) waterproof over-trousers for those horrible days Pair of proper gloves and a cheapy pair of waterproof biker gloves Had 1 spare pair of troosers and the usual pants/socks stuff. The waterproofs packed down small and kept the wind off me for those cold mornings too. Couldn't dream of having both leathers and textile, but then I only had a tank bag and a backpack (and a girlfriend on the back, so we really did pack light!) |

Re: Gear for euro bike trip
Depends where and when you are going.
I was in Serbia and Romania in July last year and it was 46c. MX boots (Ankle protection for me is a must. Leather sports pants (good protection + knee sliders ;)) MX armour on top (For ventilation) I cut the sleeves of a shirt, and wore that over the top/ish of the mx armour. Primarily for the neck protection (I hate sunburn) but also so I could lace it with mosquito repellant. Keys round my neck (keyless ignition mod (Remove keys after bike started)) Kriega wallet and documents on my waist, easy at toll booths and at country borders. http://i57.tinypic.com/kesmy9.jpg Apologies for the crappy pic PS I did come off the bike, but survived to tell the tale, so the combo does work well! |
