How much slack should my chain have?

It's pretty tight right now... Hardly any slack..

How are you checking the chain tightness and where are you measuring from?

Just with my finger. It probably moves 1/3 an inch or so? it doesnt touch the swing arm

Where are you measuring the chain?


This pic gives you the idea of how where and how.


Find the slackest part of the lower length of chain and measure the movement up & down. You need to do it when the bike is on the sidestand.

Whoah there young fella! Before you go measuring, a couple of things to note.

1. Chains can have tight spots, so roll it all the way round and check each set of links to ensure the tightness you're feeling isn't localised to one section. If it is, get a new chain - it's likely that the seals have gone.

2. Make sure you're measuring with the bike on the ground and on the sidestand.

3. Check/buy a manual.

4. Use the brilliant search function on the site to find all your answers and more (even pictures)!

Appreciate the advice. I'm also aware of the... how not searching on motorrcycle sites before you post is annoying, I did on my last two posts. Granted I didn't spend 15 or 20 minutes searching. I just wanted to ask. its my first sport bike and I wanna make it right.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but I doubt you did search.

If you'd typed in "Chain adjustment", "adjust chain", "tight chain" or basically anything with "chain", you'd have found a load of previous threads asking the same question.

The great thing about this site is you'll always get advice, but it seems a little futile making 4 posts to ask 4 different questions when really one would do or each can be solved using the search function. Anyway, I hope Daddyjob's answer answered your question.
